Different Actors playing the same part

It happends in Soap Operas alot but in other shows not that often. Theese are the shows i can remeber that a different actor took over the part of another character:

Bewitched (the two dicks, Dick York and Dick Sargent)
Big Bad Beetleborgs (Shannon Chandler and later Brittany Konarzewski as Josephine "Jo" McCormick)
Batman (Different actors playing the same villian, like catwoman for example)

if you guys can think of any others let me know

There were also three Mr. Freeze's (George Sanders, Otto Preminger and Eli Wallach). Preminger was such an SOB during his time on the set that he was replaced by Wallach
John Astin replaced Frank Gorshin as the Riddler in one two-part episode, and Maurice Evans' role as The Puzzler was a switch from a Riddler script after they couldn't get Gorshin.

The most hilarious case has to be on "Batman" when Eartha Kitt took over playing "Cat Woman" after Julie Newmar. I think that was quite on purpose, consistent with the purposeful over-the-top silliness of the show in general.

A number of examples are on "Petticoat Junction". In the 7 season history of the show, three actresses played "Billie-Jo Bradley", and two actresses played "Bobbie-Jo Bradley". Additionally, the occasional character of "Bert, The Barber" was mostly played by Paul Hartman, but two other actors played the role one or two times. In one case, it seemed that Paul must not have been available because a utility actor, occasionally seen in Paul Henning shows, essayed the role in one episode, then the next time they needed "Bert", Mr. Hartman was back.

Two different actresses played "Mrs. Ziffel" on "Green Acres.

There were two "Gladys Kravitzes" on "Bewitched", weren't there?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but......I seem to remember there being more than one actress to play the role of Hooterville town busy-body and gossip "Selma Plout".

As for "Green Acres"......the first actress to play "Doris Ziffel" was Barbara Pepper.

One interesting side-note. Barbara Pepper was a good friend of Lucille Ball, and Miss Ball had lobbied hard for Pepper to get the part of "Ethel Mertz", on "I Love Lucy", but Dezi Arnaz wouldn't hear it because he......like most of Hollywood......knew that Barbara Pepper was a terrible alcoholic. Hmmmmmm.....Funny how that didn't stop William Frawley from getting the part of "Fred Mertz". ;)

'Bewitched' had two Gladys Kravitzes (Alice Pearce died late in the second season, and, after another actress played Gladys' sister, Sandra Gould was cast starting in season 3.) Also in 1966, Kasey Rogers replaced Irene Vernon as Louise Tate. Darrin's father was played first by Robert F. Simon(known for his appearances in the early episodes of 'M*A*S*H, and as J. Jonah Jameson in that horrible 1978 'Spider-Man' series); Mr. Stephens was later(starting in 1967) portrayed by character actor Roy Roberts, known for recurring roles on 'Gunsmoke', 'The Lucy Show', and 'Petticoat Junction', although Simon reprised the role in the character's last appearance in 1971).

The '90s British sitcom 'Goodnight Sweetheart' recast the two lead female characters after a few years. The show was about a guy named Gary, who escapes his nagging wife Yvonne by time-traveling to the 1940s, where he falls in love with a wartime barmaid named Phoebe. Both lead actresses left after three years, but the show continued for three more with the replacements.

On Roseanne, Lecy Goranson (seasons 1-5 & 8) and Sarah Chalke (seasons 6, 7 & 9) played Rebecca "Becky" Conner Healy.

As we all know, the writers had a fun time with Becky looking "different" and how Chalke's Becky admitting that she liked the second Darrin much better.

Alice Pearce played Gladys Kravitz until she died in 1966. Then Sandra Gould took over until the character was written out in 1971.

Louis Tate was also played by 2 people: Irene Vernon from 1964 - 1966, then Kasey Rogers from 1966 - 1972.

Phyllis had 2 people playing Julie Erskine: Barbara Colby for only 3 episodes, & that was due to her being murdered. Liz Torres took over the part after Barbara's murder.

Partridge Family: two different kids, one blonde and one brunet, playing the drummer. Brian Forster replacing Jeremy Gelbwaks.

Diff'rent Strokes: two different Mrs. Drummonds, Dixie Carter and Mary-Ann Mobley. Again, different hair colors. Carter brunette, and Mobley redhead.

The only one I ever remember "Selma Plout" was Elvira Allman, the same actress that played Granny's rival, Elverna Bradshaw on "The Beverly Hillbillies", who was also the town gossip and busy-body in Bugtussle. I always had Elvira Allman confused with Hope Summers, who played Aunt Bea's rival and friend, Clara Edwards, on the Andy Griffith Show. I always had them confused growing up since they both looked very simular to each other and the characters they played on their respective shows were very simular to each other.

There were two actresses who played 'Wonder Woman.' Kathie Lee Crosby for a pilot and then Lynda Carter got the role when the TV series aired.

There are a couple of examples of different actors playing the same character on the Andy Griffith Show. Floyd the Barber was played by Walter Baldwin in Floyd first appearance on the show and by Howard McNear during the rest of the series run. Some may argue that it was two different characters, but remember, Howard McNear's Floyd was first refered to as Floyd Colby, then Floyd Beasley before finally sticking with the last name of Lawson. He also went from being married with a son, to being married with no children, to having never been married to finally being a widow during his last few appearances.

Ben Weaver, who owned Weaver's Department Store, was played by Will Wright during the first couple of season, then played by Tol Avery after Will Wright passed away during the second season and then by Jason Johnson during the color episodes.

There were two actresses who played Will Smith's Aunt on the 'Fresh Prince of Bel Air.' The first actress I believe was fired from the show which made room for the second actress. Who they are I forgot.

I don't recall Mary-Ann Mobley ever being a redhead. Everytime I had ever seen Mary-Ann Mobley on anything, namely game shows and talk shows during the 60s and 70s, she was always a brunette.

There were three actors who played Richard Kimble's brother-in-law Leonard Taft on 'The Fugitive.'

One them was Len McCarthy. The other was the actor who played the SWAT leader on 'Hill Street Blues" and the third was actor Richard Anderson, who was featured in the last episode called "The Judgment."

Yes - they did have fun with it. If I recall, the opening credits in later years showed all the characters morphing from their appearance in the early years to their later appearance. So Rosanne morphed from the pre-plastic surgery fatter Roseanne into the slimmer smaller-nosed Roseanne, and Becky morphed from Lecy, into Sarah, then back in Lecy...or something like that

Janet Hubert played the first Aunt Vivian, and was fired at the end of season three...even to this day, twenty years later, she's still bitter about her dismissal and her disdain towards Will Smith. She's been called out a few times recently, by ex-castmate Tatyana Ali, Wendy Williams, and Aisha Tyler telling Hubert to get over her bitterness.

Daphne Maxwell-Reid (wife of Tim) became the second Aunt Viv from season four on to the end of the series.

On The Six Million Dollar Man, 3 different actors portrayed Dr. Rudy Wells. Martin Balsam in the movie pilot from 1973, Alan Oppenheimer in the two other TV movies from 1973 and seasons 1 and 2, and Martin E. Brooks from season 3 to season 5.
