Different COL on the same station

If you listen to WKTU (Analog or HD1), at the top of the hour, they refer to themselves as WKTU Lake Success .... New York.

On the Breeze ... WKTU HD3, they announce themselves as WKTU HD3 New York. Given that The Breeze is a digital sub channel of WKTU 103.5, why would they have different City of Licenses?

I think someone made a mistake there. Originally The Breeze was on co-owned WLTW's HD3 channel. But that is now dedicated to iHeart's Broadway music service. So The Breeze was moved to WKTU. Whoever set it up said to themselves, "I'll switch the ID from WLTW HD3 New York to WKTU HD3 New York." They didn't realize WKTU is actually licensed to a small community in Nassau County, right on the Queens border, just south of the Long Island Expressway.

It stems from when 103.5 was originally the FM counterpart to a Babylon, Long Island AM station. After a few years, the FM station was moved as close to NYC as possible, to take advantage of serving Market #1, while still being licensed to a Long Island community.

Gregg is right. They edited The Breeze's ID to change it from WLTW to WKTU but forgot to change the city of license to match.

And if my memory is r, it was never affiliated with an AM. It was always an FM standalone. Started by 'Freindly Frost' to promote FM Stereo in the early days. First station in NYC to be full time stereo.

Wikipedia has: "The 103.5 frequency was assigned to Babylon, New York as WGLI-FM in 1958, simulcasting sister station WGLI 1290AM....In November 1961 Friendly Frost moved the station from Babylon to Lake Success and the call sign was changed to WTFM."

For what it's worth:

That COL is what WKTU is albatrossed with. Both they and the FCC is grandfathered into a time warp.

60's trivia: In an old Twilight Zone episode, an airplane went back in time. Just a few years. Like back to the Jurassic age. The pilot went, 'Oooops'. And the flight crew tried to find the time warp (again) that they'd obviously encountered, so they could land in 1964.
Yay! Finally! There was north Queens out the window. And the World's Fair.
The pilot announced to the passengers: 'Below you'll see Lake Success, the site of the World's Fair'.
A moment or so later, there was another 'Oooops'.
It was the 1939 World's Fair!
It was a wickedly Kafka-esque scenario.
But the World's Fair in both 1939 and 1964 were hosted nowhere near Lake Success.

And that antenna was actually in Fresh Meadows on the Long Island Expressway. It was in Fresh Meadows, which isn’t that close to Lake Success
