Different programming on translators?

I thought that this was prohibited...

If it isn't, then Dan Michaels and I are going to have to get busy with our volunteer PD duties!

"W273AB, Owego... Jamz 102.5!"

Rhythmic CHR, anyone?

If you "look"/listen to the northwest of Binghamton, you'll hear this is going on in full force at Saga/Cayuga Radio Group in Ithaca, where translators are used to rebroadcast an HD2 or HD3 signal of the main carrier... see here:

WYXL 97.3 HD2 on W277BS 103.3 (Hits 103.3 imaging)
WXYL 97.3 HD3 on W254BF 98.7 (98.7 the Vine)
WQNY 103.7 HD3 on W240CB 95.9 (870 AM, 95.9 FM News/Talk WHCU)

They've been doing this almost since the beginning of HD broadcasting at the main stations... probably for a full two years.

Before that, they used subcarriers in the main audio chain to rebroadcast the two AMs on FM translators (W277BS for WNYY 1470 and a 95.5 translator pre-WFIZ for WHCU).

the fcc laws are clear anc consise what can be and what cannot be done.

I'm not so sure I buy that, in terms of translators being allowed to relay HD2/HD3/HD4 subchannels in analog mode. It certainly caught me off-guard...

But yes, they are clear about not allowing origination of programming except in VERY limited circumstances.
