DIGITAL AUDIO BROADCASTING IS DEAD!

Guess what? The Digital Audio Broadcasting revolution in Canada is dead!!! CBC announced, according to the Northeast Radio Watch, that they're gonna turn off their DAB transmitters at the end of the month. (Or sooner!) Another digital format has bit the dust.
But now that will pave the way for IBOC to invade the True North. You'll be hearing CFRB, Chum 1050, CHUM-FM or CHIN in Toronto going HD soon. And then CKAC, CKOI-FM and CHOM-FM in Montreal doing HD as well.

And they'll all be stepping over each other's toes with their digital hash, just like the US stations.

You won't be hearing IBOC on any of those AM stations you mentioned. The CRTC has said that they won't be allowing it to be used on AM here, as they know the damage it has caused in the U.S.

In that case, the FM stations like CHUM-FM in Toronto and CKOI-FM in Montreal will be the first to make the switch.

Why would you want Canada to adopt an inherently inferior system to what it now has?

I like to believe that ANYTHING that puts AM on par with FM (or even at CD quality, if possible) would be good for AM radio. Music is cheaper to run than talk, and in some markets there's just too many talk stations!

Honestly! Does Vancouver REALLY need an ALL traffic station???
How about Toronto? The once "nifty" 1050? A what? A CP24 News TELEVISION repeater today?
That, even though there's already 680 news? Geez!

So many better things that could have been done with AM...such a shame!

Some American radio stations have a system called FMExtra, which works with existing bandwith on their transmitters. Maybe if we give that system a try, digital radio might work in both America and Canada.

It is not for debate that Eureka 147 (DAB) is the best system for terrestrial digital broadcasting. The purpose of any inband system is solely to protect stick value. Rearanging the lifeboats on the Titanic would not haved saved one more life.
