Digital OTA reception in Norristown

Well, I just got my $40 coupon for the D/A converter set top box this week and decided to a get a simple Magnavox model at the local Walmart. Anyway, I'm kinda surprised that I can pretty much pick up most of the Philly locals with my trusty rabbit ears antenna here in Norristown (I'm within sight of the Schuylkill River along Main Street a little upwind of the waste water treatment plant).

Well, all except for one...WHYY-DT...which is mostly what I've been hoping to really get the best use out of my box. Slightly disappointing, but even sending the box through my VCR's hi-fi stereo RCA input jacks makes the digital picture come pretty darned clear (about as comparable with Comcast digital or Fios, I guess).

Anyway, here's what I can receive with this simple and sub-standard setup...

3.1 KYW-DT
6.1 WPVI-DT
6.2 WPVI-Basic
6.3 Accuweather
10.1 WCAU-DT
10.2 Weather Plus
17.1 WPHL-DT
17.2 WCSN
29.1 WTXF-DT
35.1 WYBE-DT
48.1 WGTW-DT
48.2
48.3
48.4
48.5
51.1
61.1
61.2
61.3
65.1 WUVP-DT
65.2 WFPA

One of the amazing things though is that I can get channels 51 and 61 pretty clearly in digital when the analog signal was pretty crap.

Both stations have their digital transmitters at the main tower site (colocated with all the others) while their analogs are in different places. That's why you have such good reception of those.

WHYY-DT is on channel 50 at low power (and directional to protect WNJN in Montclair) so it's no surprise you're having so many issues with it. I'd say to try for WNJT-DT 43 in Trenton, but I don't know how much trouble that would be for you.

Wonder why you can't get WPSG-DT though. Seems odd, because it has more power as WTVE-DT does and you receive that...

Oh, right, I forgot about WPSG-DT...I get that one too...

And with a little repositioning of the antenna, I'm finally able to get WHYY-DT albeit with some random artifacting every now and again.
