Digital Over The Air Question

I connected my mom's digital over the air box this weekend. All the local channels, plus 2.2 (RTN) came in great; but I was getting no signal on 11. Does WXIA not have a digital signal up in the air, or is something else amiss?

They do...located on VHF channel 10...other then WGTV (currently 12, will be 8 post-transition), everybody else is on UHF.

You probably will need to relocate your antenna or get a new one. If you have rabbit ears, you may have to go with an outdoor antenna. Everything depends on how far you are from the transmitter, as well as any hills or other obstructions.

Why can't I get WGTV-HD in Hiram?

Low power to protect WDEF-TV Chattanooga Analog. WGTV-DT will move to physical channel 8 post-transition.

Also...the station has to transmit from Stone Mountain due to the Athens COL...meaning weaker coverage in the west metro. Try WNGH-DT 18/33 from Chatsworth.

Thanks for that info on 8, I was not able to pull in Chatsworth but I will twist the antenna when I have a chance and see what happens.

I wonder why 8 did not figure out a way to move their HD plant closer to the Atlanta similar to the way WUVG got in? It's not nearly as far from the top of Stone Mountain to the Richland site as it is from WFOX to Richland.

If you were not aware WUVG has analog 34 on the WFOX tower but their HD is on the Richland Tower. I never knew how they were able to get the comish to grant this or even if it were a big deal?

GPB is all about doing it cheaply; that's why they want all their DTs on VHF for lower power. The site on top of Stone Mountain is a nice one, and they don't need a tall tower.

If they did move away from Stone Mountain, the Athens coverage would likely suffer. 8 was originally an Athens station, and after 34 and 63 move out, 8 will be the only city grade signal there.

I don't know how 34 managed to move to Atlanta. It does not have a good HD signal in Athens, which is still its city of license.

I live in Duluth and use some of the TV's with a DTV box. There is a digital VHF/UHF set top rabbit ears with a built in booster from Phillips. The have two models as far as I know. One of them has more of a booster than the other. I have to extend the telescoping antennas completely out but once I turn on the booster at the maximum level, I can get 11.1 WXIA and the soon to be axed 11.2 WeatherPlus. Sometimes when it's windy WSB tiles. I don't understand how wind would affect the signal but it does.

Of course from what I understand the digital signals will be increased once they take away the analog broadcast. Does anyone know how soon after the changeover in February takes place the FCC will allow the stronger digital signals to go into effect?

WHSG 63 is licensed to Monroe (Walton County...about half way between Atlanta and Athens).

WUVG is still licensed to Athens...and must cover the COL. They need to be reported to the FCC if they are not doing so.

Stone Mountain and WGTV are both owned by the State of Georgia through their respective agencies (Department of Natural Resources and the Georgia Public Telecommunications Commission). It is much cheaper to use something you own then paying rent to transmit somewhere else (and the state has has a budget crisis now).

There used to be a analog translater on Channel 65 serving Cedartown. I think the old analog translaters statewide have been shut down already. A digital replacement is scheduled for Channel 13 from Carollton, but I don't know if it is operational yet. Point your antenna west (if possible) and try Channel 13.

The replacement translaters are all VHF. A Brasstown Bald translater on DT 12 is replacing two analogs (Young Harris 4 and Hiawassee 50). The only two UHF's are WNGH-TV Chattsworth (33/virtual 18 - former WCLP) and WJSP-TV Columbus (23/virtual 28). Everything else is VHF
