Digital Subchannels

I was flipping through the channels on my new flatscreen a couple of days ago, and saw all these subchannels for the first time (I'm a basic cable guy by trade, and this is the first time I had regular over the air TV since the digital conversion)

I was just curious to know if anybody else watches the "channels behind the channels"

We got a ton of 'em.

WKYC 3.2 - X-Band Doppler 24/7

WEWS 5.2 - Live Well Network (cooking/how-to/lifestyle)

WJW 8.2 - Antenna TV (classic TV and movies)

WDLI 17.2 - Church Channel (preach and teach)
17.3 - JCTV (teens/young adults Christian)
17.4 - Enlace USA (Spanish Christian)
17.5 - Smile of a Child (kids Christian)

WOIO 19.2 - Me TV (classic TV)

WVPX 23.2 - Qubo (kids)
23.3 - Ion Life (lifestyle programming during the day, movies at night)

WVIZ 25.2 - Ohio Channel (statewide issues/news)
25.3 - PBS World (documentaries/fine arts)
25.4 - Create (cooking/how-to)

WUAB 43.2 - This TV (classic movies and TV)

WBNX 55.2 - Religious (when actual shows are on...most of the time it's a still slide with the next program listing)
 
I am a big fan of Me-TV, and even happier now that WOIO has installed the fill translator (RF 24) for Akron/Canton.

I watch Antenna TV, too, though I generally can't get that OTA upstairs - for the same reason I couldn't get WOIO upstairs until RF 24 went on.

I get both on TWC QAM downstairs. (The upstairs set is an old tube analog model with an OTA converter attached.)

WBNX 55.2 is basically where they run the religious programming attached to owner Ernest Angley...either his own shows ("90 and 9 Club", "The Ernest Angley Hour") or associated ("Sing, Sing, Sing" with various choirs which have appeared on "90 and 9"). They have to throw in some E/I stuff on the weekends, which is where Jack Hanna comes from.

There's just not enough even classic Ernest Angley stuff to fill 24/7 on 55.2.
 
Oh, you might not get it where you are, but there's also WEAO/49:

49.1 PBS/HD/main local
49.2 Fusion (local programming repeats/arts/Arts Showcase overnights)
49.3 MHz Worldview (English language foreign TV, mostly news/public affairs)
49.4 V-me (Spanish language)

I'm a big fan of 49.3.

The same lineup runs on WNEO/45 Alliance, for those in the eastern part of the market and in Youngstown/Warren/Western PA.

49 comes and goes where I'm at (Newburgh Hts area).

And 3.2 also carries a 3 hour E/I block on Saturday mornings to keep the feds happy.

About the only station in town without a subchannel is WQHS TV 61 (Univision).
 
Antenna TV & MeTV are the best subchannels in Cleveland. They have a lot to offer programming-wise. I think WJW & WOIO need to resurrect their old logos for their subchannels. The classic "ei8ht" logo from the '60s & '70s or the late '70s through early '90s "TV8" logo & the funky "WOIO" lettering with the cursive "nineteen" signature. That would be cool.

Didn't WBNX mention years ago that they were planning a subchannel with classic movies & television shows from their library? I think it was mentioned on what used to be a public access show they aired years ago during their years as a WB affiliate.

You'd think that WJW would have brought back either the "ei8ht" or "TV8" logo for 8.2. (Some of the other LocalTV Fox affils - including the other "Fox8" WGHP/8 Winston-Salem - sport a retro logo for the Antenna TV subchannel.) As long as Bill Applegate is in charge of WOIO, I doubt they would ever bring back the classic "nineteen" logo. Just a hunch.

That WBNX retro channel... were they alluding to signing up with a MeTV, an RTV or an AntennaTV service - or have it be all locally programmed? I'm curious as to how much of their pre-1995 library is actually still attainable. Remember that prior to 1995, WBNX's shows were usually previously well-worn shows that would be passed over by WOIO or WUAB... I think the most recent program they aired at the time was "Hunter" ("Gunsmoke" itself being a staple of 55 for years).

Quite honestly, a lot of shows on that were on the pre 1994 channel 55 are now already shown on either Me TV or Antenna TV.

If 55.2 wants to go retro, at this point it's either RTV or nothing. And if even they do get RTV, a few slots will be still be taken by "90 & 9 Club" and other Angley produced programming.

Looking at HOT TV's weekend lineup, it does look a bit like what 55 used to do back in the day with all the westerns.

Maybe they can bust out the old school "spaceship" logo (remember how it used to fly into the screen and a laser would shoot it into 'TV 55') for 55.2
