Digital TV converter

Does anyone know where I can find a cheap digital TV converter? I checked the websites for Best Buy and Radio Shack and came up empty. I want something to play around with and watch digital OTA broadcasts. Thanks.

...Wal-Mart was selling one a couple of years ago that had chronic problems with what turned out to be a hardware defect; I've seen that thing on recent sale at the LaX Wally (assuming it's either a new model or one of the refurbished rejects from '04) for $89.99...

I work (not willingly) for a Wal-Mart in Connecticut and can tell you that we no longer sell those boxes. Even on clearance, there were no takers.

That does not surprise me, considering that for about a year now one could buy a 30" (or so) tube-type (as in picture tube) widescreen TV with a digital tuner for somewhere around $500. Now, there's a big variety at good prices that seem to be on pace to meeting the old analog price by the time the changeover takes place.

As it is, those tuners also were capable of receiving USDTV's subscription service which offered a limited number of famous-name 'cable' channels - about a dozen of them - at $19.99 a month. Hardly competitive with cable or the dishes. No wonder that company's getting out. It also doesn't help that there may not be as much excess bandwidth out there for them to buy up.

Now, if we can just get ol' Wally to install off-air antennas at their stores to prove one can receive local signals on these newer TVs. Go on, Wally. I challenge you.
