digital tv

this could not be right place to ask but when will the tv set have to change to digital tv set or is it all talk like digital radio bs? What is cost of radio station going digital/? when will i have to go out an buy digital radio? all they know at walmart is satellite radio and nothing else but most those folks don know ass from hole in ground about it and i am too.

IIRC...the analog TV channels are gone in February 2009.
However...you'll only be without tv IF you only have get your tv over-the-air.
Cable and satellite will still pass the digital signals to your set on the
analog assignment currently in use.

I agree with last post, you should be okay with cable. Don't even worry about digital radio, analog will be around for a long time regardless of what you hear. Transmission systems cost for digital radio are running anywhere from 60k to 275k around here per station depending on current equipment compatibility. Don't even ask where the ROI is or you will get me started.

This figure is correct. (assuming Congress doesn't change its mind again, but most observers believe they'll stick with it this time)

Just to be certain nobody gets surprised, for you to be completely unaffected by this change you must have cable or satellite on *ALL* your TVs. If you're using rabbit ears on the set in the bedroom, or the one in the den, or the one at your cabin at LBL, or you wear a TV sound radio while jogging, that set is going to go dark in 2009.

You can get (though it may be difficult to find right now) a converter box that will let you watch digital over-the-air TV on an analog TV.

There have been what are called standard definition TV (SDTV) sets that have come out in recent months in 25 inch and larger (I believe) that have the same 4:3 picture as older sets but are capable of picking up digital signals, although it won't be high definition. Also, I think I remember reading that some time soon all TV sets have to be capable of receiving digital signals.
