Dinosaur

Sixty years ago this week, I landed my first radio job at 500-watt daytimer WMCW in Harvard, Illinois. I was 17 and worked through my college vacations by filling in the station's extended summer hours. I was delighted to find posts about my alma mater here, thought I'd drop in for old time's sake.

I ended my radio days earlier this month by holding a Zoom session of tips for young reporters at KVPR-FM in Fresno/Bakersfield. In between, all kinds of roles at 11 stations in Cleveland, Windsor/Detroit, Montreal, New York, Tokyo and Los Angeles. Along with two friends, we launched at 14-station wired news network on 14 California FM rockers in the 70s. Officially a dinosaur, I'm more of a brontosaurus than a velociraptor, but totally jurassic. 🦕

I served in a variety of roles including DJ, reporter, news director and GM. WCLO Janesville WI, WPVL Metro Cleveland, CJOM-FM Windsor/Detroit, CHOM-FM Montreal, WQIV-FM and WNEW-FM in New York. KTYO in Tokyo, KNX and KABC in Los Angeles — plus KVB.FM, my streaming EDM station in Venice Beach California. All of them ridiculously fun!
