DirecTV FSN nets to be renamed "Root Sports"

This was the name they came up with after 18 months of R & D? Wow. I'm not feeling it.

Hell, I could have come up with this name after a few cold PBRs. I'd be asking for my money back from whatever PR firm came up with this.

Oh, I get it - "root" for your teams on Root Sports. Weak.

What are they going to call their nighty sports highlight show - "The Root Canal"? ;D

Pittsburgh Penguins hockey on Root Sports.

Um, ewww?!

Makes me think of "Root Canal". Of course I wasn't a Marketing Major...

I also think of...planting and gardening.

Revive the name Prime Sports or SportsChannel. (And if you do the latter, go for a remake of their last graphics package. Pure awesomeness.)

Agreed on the stupidity of Root Sports; and I live in an area where one of the renamed networks is(FSN Northwest); I love the Prime Sports/Sports Channel idea too.

Since those three were more Prime Sports affiliates networks, I would go with that myself.

Several radio stations in Myrtle Beach and Florence in South Carolina were owned by Root Communications. Now it's called Qantum. I don't know why there's no u after the q.

let's see....in Pittsburgh that means the local RSN will have been known as HSE, KBL, Prime Sports, Fox Sports Pittsburgh
and FSN. That much turnover can't be good for marketing.

In this market you want to pick an ID with some staying power. Like "KDKA"...

"Root Sports" is an incredibly dumb name...they're better off staying region-specific, i.e. "Pittsburgh Sports Net", "Rocky Mountain Sports Net", etc.

The best name for a regional sports network is Altitude.
It not only conveys the right geography, but loftiness,
achievement, reaching for the heights, etc. They need
to find the guy or gal who came up with that name and
turn them loose creating a unique ID for each of the RSN's.

Why don't they just keep the name they had? Im surprised the never went to the FS Pittsburgh name for example.

It's because all of the FS (Insert name) nets are FOX Sports O&Os. These three are just affiliates.

Thanks. I was wondering why this didn't seem to have an effect on other Fox-affiliated regionals.
