DirecTV plays hardball with Sunbeam

Well, it's official. The Pats are in the Superbowl. If the issue hasn't been resolved, this could be a major problem for bars. A lot of the bars that I've been to in the area use DirecTV as their provider, and this could be trouble for them. I actually think that more bars in my area have DirecTV than any other provider.

I don’t think NBC will allow the Stupid Bowl not to be aired on DirecTV in the Boston Market. If this happens, NBC could probably sue Sunbeam.

Not since the final game of the Patriots' regular (undefeated*) season in 2007 (airing on the NFL Network) has a game involving New England had the possibility of not being seen in many households.

I heard on NPR that Senator Kerry is trying to make a negotiation that the Super Bowl should be shown on DirecTV in the Boston area, even if not on WHDH. They could provide a special broadcast of WNBC or whatever, to be shown during the big game ONLY.

Maybe Senator Kerry could send out the National Guard, to install TV antennas for people.
(It's not like the station is refusing to let anyone see them. It's just that one of their "providers" won't be carrying them.)

I Tweeted at them "will you buy me a converter box? Do you really think I'm going to pay twice to watch your station?"

It's an easy thing to say when you are not the one affected. I have DirecTV, live about 70 miles from Boston, have an antenna with a rotor and preamp on my roof, and cannot receive WHDH, despite the fact that I'm in the "Boston" market. So please don't start with the antenna garbage or the fact that Kerry is making an issue with this. At least he's aware of the problem and is trying to do something which is more than I can say about Sunbeam or DirecTV that, at the moment, are sitting on their butts and doing nothing about the problem. I'm tired of hearing about increased costs by stations...just give in already, our bills WILL GO UP regardless of what they charge so just add a few cents to my ever increasing bill and be done with it. It's been almost two weeks without two local stations and it's getting old fast. This is what happens when the government screws around with TV. Back in the 70s and 80s local stations were required to be carried by cable companies so that they could best serve the community, now stations, due to greed set forth by the government, can charge whatever they want and hold cable and satellite companies hostage and screw over the subscriber. It is a snapshot of how greed is ruining this country - it may just be a few stations but the bigger picture of what is happening to TV suggests otherwise.

That used to be true before locals into locals was introduced. Now, as I understand the rule, if a subscriber in a given market is offered locals in that market, the grade B reception rule no longer applies. As far as I know there are no exceptions to this rule. Even though WHDH has told DirecTV to pull the station due to a contract dispute, I still think the local into local rule applies. Maybe I'm wrong and that's why some subs who can't get an NBC signal of any kind are eligible for WNBC right now. In any case, even if you are close enough to get a signal, without an antenna you are out of luck, and I don't think it is fair that some people may have to go out and buy equipment to get their NBC programs while others enjoy the luxury of getting the New York signal. I am lucky enough to not only have an antenna, but also in an elevated location to get signals from several cities, but I'm sure many people in my area, and in other areas, do not have an antenna and will miss out on programs. As for the CW, I tried today and I can get WCCT channel 20 out of Waterbury, CT if I aim just right, so even that I won't miss. But again, what about everyone else? I think either everybody should get WNBC in the market or nobody. Just my two cents.

I agree with the last two sentances. But the FCC has prohibited satellite consumers to provide out-of-market networks in their home Designated Market Area unless they don't get local-into-local service on satellite (HD or SD) or living in a market that's a lack of the big four (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) networks like Jackson, TN for example. Unfortuantely, there's network non-duplication and syndex rules in place, I think those laws should be eliminated in the first place. One person you can blame for bringing the "Retransmission Consent" thing in the first place and put in the those laws written 20+ years ago was ex-Senator John Danforth (R-Missouri). You can blame the bullies at the NAB also.
