DirecTV vs. Time Warner Cable - Pros and Cons

I understand that this thread is basically "DirecTV vs. Cable". But the OP mentioned a comparison to Time-Warner Cable. My understanding is Time-Warner will become part of Charter soon. (And even that name is somewhat uncertain, as Charter is marketing themselves more as "Spectrum".) Charter does a decent job, but like all major cables they lure you in with some nice rates and then increase them after about a year. Charter has a decent channel lineup, but can be stingy with some, like IFC, Sundance, We, and a few others that are offered on other cables basic services. I hope they can increase the value of their basic services as they become one of the big players.

I'm hoping Time Warner Cable doesn't go through with the merger, but if they do, a name change might be a good idea since Time Warner is a different company.

But except for the digital cable upgrade, my experiences with Time Warner have been mostly positive up until now. Still, my next door neighbor and the people across the street both have dishes. I've never asked why.

It's been a few months since any of us had commented on this thread, but I still have Time Warner Cable and there's one pro to having it here in Northeast Ohio that has come up since that time. Lately, WJW Fox 8 in Cleveland has not been available on Dish Network due to a carriage dispute between the satellite company and Tribune Television. There would certainly be no reason for us to switch to Dish Network given that deficiency. As for DirecTV, I'm pretty sure it's still available there, but we still hadn't given much thought to switching.

I've noticed more and more people have been "cutting the cord" and relying on digital antennas and converter boxes for their TV needs in response to the recent increase in many cable companies' rates. My cousin recently moved into a new house about 20 minutes from us and he just has one of those antennas. Picks up all the local stations in the Northeast Ohio area, including the digital subchannels. My question is, being the big sports fan he is, how does he survive without ESPN, Fox Sports Ohio or Sports Time Ohio? LOL

Since I started this thread, the launch of a new low-power station has made a few more digicast networks available in our area. WEKA Channel 41 broadcasts Newsmax TV, while its subchannels broadcast Sonlife Broadcasting Network, Buzzr, The Liquidation Channel, QVC and The Country Network. Bad news is none of the cable companies in this region seem to have picked it up. Too bad because I'd enjoy watching Buzzr the most.

As for the Time Warner Cable merger, I can only hope the company doesn't jack up the rates even more as a result, but that's a good possibility.

I know several people that have simply bought the season long packages for whatever sport they follow. Like Center Ice for NHL or MLB at Bat for baseball. Or if you are with the right mobile carrier you can get At Bat for free like I did with T-Mobile. If someone doesn't watch much else besides sports it works out to being a lot cheaper than paying for cable each month.

The new rate cards for the combined Charter/TWC/Brighthouse have leaked out: https://www.**********.com/shownews/New-Charter-TV-Packages-Broadband-Tiers-Leaked-137738

A good number of people are purchasing Roku, Fire sticks and similar.
There are a very good number of add-ons available, particularly movies
and sports..... They receive locals via an outdoor antenna then enhance
their viewing options with one of the above.
