Disappointing DX trips

I went to Carlsbad Caverns with my family once several years ago.

Good luck getting *ANYTHING* in there!
I think the parking lot would be a good place. I think one could receive Roswell stations easily. El Paso and Midland-Odessa may also make it in considering how empty the dial is there.

I once tried DXing at Yarrangobilly Caves area in the Snowy Mountains of NSW. Using a car radio outside in the tiny village, NOT one single FM station could be received!! - not even nearby local powerhouse 97.7 Snow-FM (Cooma NSW). - It was weird tuning a completely empty FM band!!

I was talking about INSIDE the Caverns, not on or near the surface. :)

I guess you'd probably have a better chance at getting sub-5kW Trans-Atlantic stations on 1071, from the southwest quadrant of Columbia Park in Torrance, CA, using just a Coby CX-70 and its built-in antenna. :p

If it was (local) summer, should have kept that radio around 88 mhz - any signal means E-skip or meteor scatter!

I rarely had good luck dxing from any sort of hotel or motel. Well, I did OK in San Juan, PR back in 2001--Bahamas and Virgin Islands by day, Venezuela, Venezuela, Venezuela (plus one or two statesiders) by night.

Also in London that year, I could pick up a few MW stations from France (and v.v.--my Paris hotel allowed some fading reception of BBC on 648.) I'm not quite sure what I picked up in Italy, so many stations and other band clutter there.

I thought Hawaii at night would be interesting. Tried to pick up KFI from the car, but the local on 650 (KHNR?) made it impossible. Thought about getting up early to try for Japan and the South Pacific (Australia, etc), but had other things on my mind...

As many of those on this board are aware, I've been a frequent business traveler for many years....a little less so these days since I've been semi-retired.

That means a lot of time in hotels, and I agree that DXing in hotels can be difficult, and is becoming increasingly more so in the age of CFL lights, HDTVs, more and more electronic equipment inside and outside of the hotel. But there are still ways you can find out what's out there. First of all turn off the lights, TV, along with your laptop if you're traveling with one. If that doesn't seem to help much, move by a window. Another thing I'll sometimes do is see if I can get a room on the top floor. A lot of steel and concrete buildings are absolutely dead to incoming signals, but not so much on the top floor.

Another good thing to do is ask for a room away from the elevator, ice machine, HVAC, etc., if at all possible (I'll sometimes ask for a room at the end of the hall.) If this doesn't help with DXing, this should at least be a quieter location for a good niight's sleep.

What island were you on? If you were on Oahu, then you probably would have trouble picking up KFI with the strong local signal from the station on 650. I used to live on Kauai a long time ago, about 100 miles away from what was then KORL-650, and I could pick up KFI on a regular basis, especially in the winter months.

KFI is tough on Oahu, but it can be done if you have a good radio. "Hm" did you ever hear KGO when you lived in Hawaii? I've never heard it on several trips to Hawaii. They have a deep null in that direction.

I would think that Kauai would generally be good for DX in most locations. Board member Don Mussel lives there and has contributed a number of good DX reports in the past.

As for KFI, when I lived in Honolulu for a year in high school in the mid-60s, it was basically impossible for me because of local KORL on 650. 10kw only a few miles from me. (The stick for 650 has since moved to an area outside of town, north of Pearl Harbor).

Years later, back in Maui for a visit, KFI was relatively easy (but not as strong as KNX or KTNQ).
