Cool, I'll alert the media and we can do it all over again.
How about we start with a "Disco" record from the Sugarhill Gang called "Rappers Delight", which samples Chic's "Good Times" ::)

Disco is alive and well. It has more fans than ever, thank you very much, and has successfully completed a Cocaine anonymous program and currently resides in every Rap and Techno hit.

Seriously, the Comisky Park thing was nothing but a huge KKK rally. It was just a reminder that us minorities need to know our place - or burn.

Yes, Disco did "die", but if I can help it then dance music WILL become right up there with hip-hop, pop, rock and R&B.

Thank you, Tony. More power to you!

Maybe we can get this anger out of the way and get some good vibes back. I live in Buffalo, and a lot of the clubs here have stopped playing hip-hop because the owners have finally figured out that too much violence follows it. DUH!!! It brings in the "gangstaz", both real and fake, white & black alike - and too many of them come out for the sole reason to get some "action". Lately the clubs are playing more upbeat dancy stuff, not quite disco, not quite techno, but not quite hip-hop either. It's kind of in a state of flux really...

I think we all need to stop for a moment and remember our musical roots. Take a moment to read the lyrics of "Blaze - Do YOU remember house?", because that tells the story of it ALL right there - disco, rap, rock, house, trance - all of it. If it's four on the floor, that's where it came from.

Disco never died...it just became disguised. The average person thought disco was just Saturday Night Fever along with the bigger songs that surrounded it. Even into the early 80's, Billboard still had a "Disco Chart" and featured everything from Shannon, to Freeze, Taffy, and anything with that sound. Disco gave birth to Freestyle, Hi NRG, House and everything inbetween. Even New Wave records were disco influenced (i.e. Pet Shop Boys, New Order, etc.). Disco deserves WAY more credit! Georgio Morodor was a genious (I Feel Love), as his stuff sounds like it was produced in the future.

I have to wonder, what exactly was the purpose of that original post? It doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose. It's just a statement that the type of music discussed in this forum is supposedly dead. Consider this: the user's name is "rapking", and the nature of the post would seem to indicate he does not like disco. Therefore, one might conclude that the post was meant simply to be inflammatory and harrassing, rather than to open some form of useful discussion.

The post pretty much says, "Nya, nya! My music is cool and yours sucks". Kind of childish really, and to some extent confirms my earlier statement that bad vibes follow Rap like a dark cloud. On the other hand, "Disco" - in all its multitudes of form as mentioned above by DJ_Perry - is all about music, dancing, having a good time, and enjoying yourself. It's also about music that is actually musical. There is a melody, lead instruments, backup instruments, and singing, and some of the compositions are immensely complex. However, if one were to take away the typically simple spoken word of a rap song, the quality of the remaining musical score is generally low, and sounds as if it was composed on a Casio keyboard from Walmart.

There is also the political and emotional content of rap, a high percentage of which describes or promotes various forms of violence, from cop killing to gang warfare. I can't really think of a single disco song that even begins to approach that kind of negativity. Some songs such as "Green Velvet - Pills, Thrills, & Brain Cells", or "Junkie XL - Red Pill, Blue Pill", talk a lot about drugs, but it's in the context of discoing and partying. I mean, you can't really have a violent disco song - the two just don't go together.

Arrghh... Ok, I've gone off on a rant... Sorry...

Am I off base here?

Does any one share these opinions?

let's not forget that Disco also is the base of many hip hop records. Not exactly Hip Hop, but the new J Lo samples "Tavares - Only Takes a Minute." Along with the countless others (not so much recently but the whole Puff Daddy era sampled Diana Ross, Rene' & Angela, Cheyl Lynn, Eddie Kendricks, Tom Tom Club, etc etc).

And I MUCH PREFER Dance Music over Hip-Hop ANY day!!

Dance Music is FAR, FAR BETTER than all the Hip-Hop stuff they have out now!!

Besides, I like the hooks in a LOT of the Dance Music songs, like DJ Peter Presta's "Totally Hooked" which samples Boston's "Oh What A Feeling".
