Discone Antennas

Do discone antennas receive anything on the lower bands--medium & shortwave?
I know they're designed for 28 mhg & up, but I'm wondering if they work at all on lower frequencies too?

Anything will work. Just not well. The wire on the Discone up in the air will work better than a wire on the floor inside. But not as good as a 'real' HF antenna.
 
Another thought. The discone antenna uses a coax connection. You might do better by connecting the shield wire of the coax as the antenna :)
 
Anyone have experience using a Discone as a broadcast remote pickup antenna? I have a chance to put one about 250 ft up and it occurred to me it would be good for 10, 6, 2, aircraft, FM and UHF Marti work. Just wondered if anyone has tried it. Thanks, CB
 
Not too sure about 10 and 6. Anything above that should work great. But make sure that you are not getting bleed from any transmitters on the tower. It IS a wide band antenna.

Anyone have any experience with this antenna? Does it really transmit on 6 meters? I don't expect anything great on 6M just usable.
Is the all around receive on all frequencies adequate?

I have the RadioShack version discone antenna, and it looks very similar to the one Grove sells. It will Tx and Rx on 6-meters, but not very well. A discone is really a wide-band high VHF/UHF antenna. Mine is connected to a scanner.

Did you mean it does not transmit & receive well on 6 meters? I understand it may not transmit well on 6, but I would think it would receive OK.
Am I wrong?
 
The dimensions of a discone antenna are just too short to give good receive or transmit performance on 6 meters, as compared to a half-wave vertical. The metal whip on top of my discone is only about 3ft long, whereas a half-wave 6m vertical will be about 10ft long. Makes quite a difference in performance. Again, the dimensions of a discone make it a reasonable performer from say 100Mhz up thru the UHF band. Above 800Mhz or so, then cable loss from antenna to radio becomes significant.

When I first heard of a discone a long time ago I immediately imagined a huge version that went down the bottom of MW in coverage......

It should be possible. But pretty hard to build.
 
When you think of a 43 foot vertical, ground mounted, with lots of radials, sounds an awful lot like a Discone on HF to me :)
