That's funny because 4 -6 months back Wal-Mart had these HD radios (HD table clock radios) on sale at it's website stores, but now they have none!

Wal-Mart is known for very excellent shelf accounting and how many units get sold etc. so if they view a product of not moving in terms of sales, it's discontinued very quickly and another product put in place, I've noticed this in stores where you see an item on sale, then 2-3 months later it's discontinued even though there might be some limited sales.

I bet the JVC HD car stereo will be gone by the end of the year from all it's stores and perhaps only offered at it's website till they get the message it's not selling either.

Before everyone gets their shorts all twisted up, that's nothing really new for consumer electronics. My old business had a retail side and we got a good dose of this. It seems that most CE manufacturers build all of the quantity of a given model they intend to sell in one huge production run. It is cheaper that way. That production run sits in a warehouse, and when they get down to critical numbers (almost none left) they decide if they should have another run, or replace the model. Usually the decision is to replace it with a new "improved" version. There are a number of reasons for that. First, they frequently outsource the actual production. It goes to the plant that offers them the best deal. For the first run, run Beijing 797 Audio may have the best price/terms. The next time around they get a better deal from Sound King in Shanghai. Because the product comes from different suppliers, it is easier to call it a new model to disguise the minor changes inherent to each plant.

Secondly, it is a clever marketing move. A new model gives them an elegant way to adjust the price without sabotaging what they have already delivered to dealers. It makes it more difficult for the consumer to price shop. In fact, frequently a mass marketer will have their own exclusive model number for a given product. That makes it impossible for the consumer to get a better price at a competitor. When they are gone, they are gone, and the cycle starts over again.

Third, as the American automotive companies have known for years, new models make product excitement. It is a good selling tool.

NOW, if those companies you mentioned fail to release a new replacement model for the fall (Yes, this is seasonal..It happens a couple of times every year), then you might be on to something.

Yeah, there probably aren't any left in BA's warehouse, and they probably don't want to repeat the mistake. If you had a product that was largely panned by 50% of the people who used it, would you want to make more? Realistically speaking, they will need to come out with a different model.

Most consumer electronic companies don't announce the end of a product until they have delivered all the units they have in stock to their dealers. You could usually tell when that would happen. As I mentioned, it is somewhat calendar specific, and the real clue was they’d have some kind of special dealer incentive just before pulling the plug. Usually, if you asked the Sales Rep if they blowing these out because there was a newer-cheaper-better model about to be dumped in every store in the area but yours, they’d deny it.

But then you could usually tell if the sales rep was lying if his lips were moving.... ;)

Oh, probably that’s a little unfair. There are some really good factory reps out there.

But that's just it. Wouldn't the manufacturers announce a new product close on the heels of discontinuing their current product...some way of indicating that they haven't given up on the technology? From what I can tell none of the CE manufacturers mentioned are even offering an assurance that something new is in the pipeline. Of course, I'm comparing this to a product that's been successful in the marketplace.

All of this reminds me of the cliche, 'If a tree falls in a forest....etc.' These HD Radios being discontinued appears to have gone largely unnoticed by consumers. Not a whimper or cry of complaint. I'm sure that's at the root of the problem anyway.

In the mean time iPhone which just appeared to the market just two weeks ago is already announcing soon the iPhone Nano.. this is a typical type of marketing strategy that is missing by the HD guys...

Why discontinue if no new HD radio is being introduced to the public? Where is the HD Radio Alliance in defense of these product discontinuations?

Close, maybe, but not usually simultaneously. That gives the dealers a little time to dump whatever they have in stock. Once a new model comes out the "last year' model" is about as welcome as the plague in most retail establishments. It is not uncommon to blow old models (especially ones that did not sell well) for less than cost. The thought is you are better off getting some of your money back than none of it. As one of my old sales guys said, "Two quick nickels beats one slow dime."

I understand that Radio Shack is featuring the BA in their latest flyer. Maybe they got a real deal.

I'd look for a new product announcement in late July or maybe early August. If you don't hear anything by then, it may be a long time. We'll see.
