Discovery Beyond The Singles

Some of us have had quite big fun hijacking the Standring thread to post other songs we've discovered that are more appropriate than the single for lower-demo skewing SJ or Instrumental Oriented AA aproaches so here's a thread to do that in. Not to establish rules but let's make this one an oasis for song-sharing and create or follow up other threads for programming theory and related comments. Please jump in when your ears perk up!

Great idea, Cat! I didn't particulary mind the hijacking of my thread because it was provocative, spirited, and insightful conversation, which is exactly what we need. But a good move nonetheless! Makes it easier to find for everyone. Thanks too for the heads up on the Sade CD, which is due for release a week from today. SO relieved it has some viable cuts on it. ;D

Go listen on the iTunes site..think you'll hear a few good ones. I wish she'd do some of that killer groove she invented - "Paradise" "Keep Looking"
"Sweetest Taboo" type stuff but she's moved on. Check out Lisa Shaw's "I'm OK" and Daniella Nardi's "215" to maintain that old-Sade vibe and Pat Appleton's "Smart Traveler" has a bit of it too.

3 from the other thread -
Jessy J- "Mr. Prince," much tighter and more forward momentum than single
Rick Braun - "She's The One" very nice reognizable braun sound midtempo
Antoine-Brown " French Connection" very identifiable Antoine sound here

And...
Kim Waters - "Reaching Out" was actually a good choice but it sounds even stronger when you put the 2 minutes that were edited out back in. "Song of Passion" is my favorite. For those who like it mellower "Beyond The Horizon" has that smooth jazz shuffle groove but it's tight and very melodic

When it comes to big names several Corrine trax are growing on me and I think the single was the best choice but I'm not feelin Norah..that jangly indie rock think is a texture that makes me wish shed go back to hanging out with Peter Malick. Bob Lefsetz said pretty much the same thing on his blog. I don't feel like these textures showcase her voice best but then I never was into the country stuff she did on her other albums either.

Check out Lisa Shaw's "I'm OK"

Always enjoyed Lisa Shaw's early house material from years past.

Just downloaded this.....it's a great track.

George Benson's "Exotica" is a much better track than "Nothin' But A Party" although "Party" is more urban A/C and "Exotica" is CJazz so the A/C track was "safer"

OK, I heard Will Donato's "Funkability" last night on Blake Aaron's show. Gang, I have to tell you. It is OFF THE HOOK good. The promoters got it right this time. Tremendous vibe! Not surprising that Darren Rahn had a hand in the production.

Cat, I agree that "Exotica" is the best cut on the Benson CD. And like you mentioned, the new Sade CD has some viable cuts on it. Downtempo and nothing that particularly blows me away, but far better than the title track, IMO.

Of course I found another song. Standring's "Please Mind The Gap" Not as dark and riffy as the title trak

So I think a lot of us felt that the strongest cut on PW's CD was the beautiful, catchy Always Forever but the label is delivering "Good Day" - a pleasant unobtrusive track that is OK but nowhere near as compelling as several other songs but does stick to the Smooth A/C formula.

It's funny..the industry insiders have been going ga-ga over the new Sade and yet several people including the PD at the station I brunch for have not "heard" it as being that incredible to say the lest. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in that perception. To tell the truth I liked the jazzy, sexy, almost house music groove her first round of work had better than this stark bleakness. Her and Corrine's midwinter releases could really accelerate a case of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

For some reason I was hoping it was going to be along the lines of AYA's Strange Flower. With that I am disappointed as well.

Aya's "Strange Flower" has Sade and CBR's new offerings beat, hands down, not even close.

Cat, if you notice I mentioned "Please Mind The Gap" in the Standring thread. And there are at least two others I will add when I get the CD, to include "March of the Bowler Hats" and "Sensual Overload," which I really like. Like we have always said, different strokes for different folks. But humor me and check out Blake Aaron's show when I air it so you can hear Chris talk about the production. ;) He talks about why it's dark, and it really gives you a great window into who Chris is as a person and what really makes him tick.

I'll have to do that because I'm setting up an interview w. Chris for SmoothViews soon...
Goin' to check the Aya song right now :)

Cat, the Aya CD is a few years old. I think Nock was trying to say that he was hoping the vibe of the new CBR would be similar to the Aya CD. Nonetheless, the Aya CD is a very good listen, and you should check it out.

Congrats on interviewing Chris. I am sure it will be a good read. I'll give you a heads up when I air Blake's syndicated show with Chris. They are still working on the production.

OK, so I think I settled on a replacement for the title cut from Sade's new CD. Check out "Skin." By no means will it get you off on your feet, but the vibe and vocals are decent enough for airplay, IMO. ;)

Saw her on Letterman the other night and actually, well maybe, enjoyed the tune live? Guess what amazed me was my 18 year son really liked it?

You want to hear another great project, Terje Lie's new one. There is a ton of material to work with on this cd. Jeff Lorber shines on this one. I finally pried a copy from Terje. In a previous post, I posted how he was single focused. There are a lot of potential singles on this one. Well singles probably wrong word to use. Gonna have fun with this one.

Terje Lie's CD, based on the 30-second samples, is quite a nice listen. I really like the single "Bail Out," which I am spinning now. At first glance, "Blue Funk", "So Retro", and "Parlophone" are ripe for radio play, and others have potential.

I'm really diggin' the new Alan Hewitt "Retroactive" CD.

Heard several outstanding cuts you'll never hear played on (B)oring & (A)ntiquated like "Saturday Afternoon" and "In The Works". I had always enjoyed his previous release "Metropolis" as well.

Recall this dude from years past when known as The Alan Hewitt Project with the "Noche de Pasion" CD.

Alan actually got his start on the production side of some of Earth Wind and Fires classic stuff. I hit the second track All For You Saturday after playing In The Works the last month. Still think this new one from Saxman Terje Lie is a killer project. Between these 2 cd's I am going to be having a lot of fun. Hey Goldfrapp has a new one that is a nice vocal, Rocket.

Kinda scared of Hewitt's project because his version of Shaft actually sounded like the version that one of the music providers for the old beautiful music format put out back in the late 70s..I only know this because I was working at a station that had B/EZ on a sub frequency that they franchised kinda like the Muzak company..offices and merchants subscribed to it and one of our jobs was to make sure it was running and hadn't crashed so we had to monitor it sometimes. eek! When it comes to close to sounding like B/EZ or Lawrence Welk I run the other way...

Ignore that track ---- I promise there is a ton of great music on this cd. Between this one and Terje Lie's new one, I am having fun! Interesting that I had to beg artist and promoter to give me the full because a single --- if I like --- has a life expectancy of maybe 3 shows for me?

Nock is spot on. Don't let "Shaft" scare you. I spun it for a spell, but I am on to deeper cuts, and there is tons of vibe on this CD. The Terje Lie CD is also a very good listen, to include the single "Bail Out."
