Discussing the DaVinci Code Podcasts

Well, we have a new "enemy" to fear. First we villify the defunct New Age movement, then evolution, anything but KJV, Christian rock, poor Harry, and now a work of FICTION - everybody with a brain knows its fiction - it will be a hit for a couple of weeks until the next blockbuster comes out, then fade away with a brief flurry of DVD sales. But a lot of people are panicing like its the end of the world - AGAIN. Your listeners don't care, they want MUSIC. So I would pass on this. Unless you want to go back to the McCarthy era of a communist everywhere, or the unforunate Derek Prince era of a demon under every bed.

Gotta Agree for the most part, Bruce. Some movie's not going to spell the end of our faith as we know it. It's another lesser truth that could easily eat up the time that we could actually spend on what really matters.

Except Bruce it's not the fiction that the Davinci podcasts have to argue against. It's the research Dan Brown did. The first page of Dan Brown's Book features the line "All descriptions of artwork, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate."Meaning that to the unenlightend they're true. Programs like this can help to stimulate discussion, get people into churches. It's far more productive than storming Universal Studios with signs and protests like what occured when "The Last Temptation of Christ" hit screens.

I host a talk show on a secular radio station in Wilmington each Saturday night. The topics are usually secular, based on what the hot news stories are for that week (War in Iraq, how to handle the Illegal Immigrants, etc). Tonight, I had a guest on, a Roman Catholic priest, as we discussed the topic, "The Da Vinci Code is it Creative Fiction or Blasphemy?" He did a great job discussing the various issues that have come out of the Da Vinci Code. He also is a teacher and has a fantastic knowledge of Jewish history from the 1st Century, etc which added to the discussion making for an interesting and informative hour. He made a great point that a book and a movie like the Da Vinci Code makes a great teachable moment to share our faith with the world, which both of us as brothers in Christ did tonight on a secular radio show (who knows how the Lord may have used that broadcast). Unfortunately, there are many who call themselves Christians who also do not know their Bible very well. So they become easy victims for being misled by a creative novel such as the Da Vinci Code. Unfortunately, people over react and want to start boycotts, etc, which just causes controversy which then the media exploits causing larger sales of the book (over 40 million copies sold) and movie (released to more than 12,000 theatres world wide). An Associated Press story that came over the wire just before I went on the air tonight tells about two town officials, in a small Italian town that decided to burn the Da Vinci Code book in the town square. A number of the town's people were offended and threw tomatos at them calling the town officials Facists (Hitler burned books he didn't agree with in the 1930's in Nazi Germany). Have we not learned anything since Hitler. Burning books is not the answer. Also banning books, making it forbiden fruit also doesn't work as we all know. That just makes folks want to read it all the more. So having open discussions to inform the public is, in my opinion the better way to go. So I believe that yes the Da Vinci Code is just a novel, but due to too many folks in the church lacking solid knowledge of the Bible and confusion for those folks has occurred. Because of this, I believe discussing the issue on shows like mine and on Podcasts is a good thing.

Saw it - loved it

A bit OT - but if it forces Opus Dei to quite using those self torture devices and techniques due to public pressure, its worth the controversy. The self torture devices are REAL - the local TV station interviewed an Opus Dei - whatever, and they had one. SICK, PERVERTED SELF-MUTILATING! Now THERE is an issue for Christian radio - exposing wierd self mutilation and self torture cults like Opus Dei. If there were ever a public service, that would be IT - putting a stop once and for all to that type of nonsense! I wish Marlin Maddoux were alive, I bet he could run a two hour expose on that cult and submarine it!
