DISH NETWORK dropping WPRI(12) and WNAC(64) 3/4/11

Sorry, I cannot find the story but WPRI just ran the story. If DISH and LIN(parent company) cannot come to common ground DISH NETWORK in RI will drop WPRI and WNAC this Friday 3/4/11.

If someone finds a link please post it....

We've been seeing more of these cable/satellite disputes with broadcast stations lately. And to think that the FCC is trying to curtail and/or end OTA broadcasting...

WTNH is running ads slanted at making Dish look like the villain in this folly. I thought I read somewhere that LIN wants something along the lines of a 140% increase in payment to be carried.

Personally I hope Dish drop all the LIN properties. Somebody needs to have the onions to stand up to these media groups' games that only result in higher fees for customers. Maybe LIN (and other broadcasters) will think twice if they get dropped like a hot potato.

Supposedly Dish has pulled all the LIN stations off their service. I hope they stick to their guns! The only thing I see if Dish caves to LIN's outrageous demands is a bigger bill for their customers. Somebody needs to take a stand and draw a line to these guys and I hope Dish stands their ground.

Sure, I bet they are getting a hornet's nest worth of calls from upset customers but they need to explain the fact that his they caved their bill would go up. If Dish gives in to LIN who would be next demanding outrageous fees and demands for carriage?

I hope Dish serves LIN up a big case of whoop-arse on this one. As a consumer I am tired of ever increasing prices and I dropped my tv provider (DirecTV) thanks to their Free HD for Life for all except existing customers.

So, how will RI residents watch FOX and CBS programming on DISH for the time being? Will DISH just throw up WFXT and WBZ for them or some other distant affiliates?

They are...????

The FCC surely does not encourage OTA broadcasting these days. With the flip to digital came an end to a lot of TV that crossed over from other ADIs (WJAC and WWCP in Johnstown to the Pittsburgh market comes to mind, even though WJAC at one time many moons ago was essentially the NBC affiliate at least to Westmoreland County) and there is no control over a cable system's decisions not to carry a low-power station (Comcast and its refusal to carry WBGN Pittsburgh comes to mind, though I think it has something to do with Comcast charging WBGN for space on its systems).

I have Dish, and called to complain this morning. Short answer: Too bad, we're not paying LIN that. Suck it up.

They told me too watch network fox and CBS programming online.... which defeats the purpose of paying for Sat TV.....

I can't speak for Dish but I had Directv and they carried NEW YORK and Los Angeles Affiliates for people who could not get OTA.
I think Dish should supply those affiates during network programming as acourtesy.

"That's Illegal" according to the DISH CSR "Supervisor". I asked. I told him I didn't care what market my Fox/CBS programming came from. They said they couldn't give me another market.

Of course, on the flip side will Dish be giving affected customers a credit for not receiving one or more channels due to this "problem" with LIN?

They were noncommittal. They said it depends on how long this goes on.

Can't most people get FOX and CBS with an antenna? When my friend lived there he was able to get both Providence and Boston affiliates with an antenna.

It's pretty obvious that the broadcasters aren't the ones playing hardball when they have no trouble reaching amicable settlements with Comcast, Cox, DirecTV et al but always seem to have disputes with Cablevision, Dish and TWC. And it's important to keep in mind that a lot of that retrans money is being funneled to the networks in the form of reverse compensation.

According to Jay Howell on the Dan Yorke show today, WPRI and WNAC have not asked for Boston affiliates of their networks to be removed from cable/sat systems in Bristol County. So why don't we get them?
