DISH NETWORK PULLS THE PLUG ON 17 LIN-TV STATIONS TODAY

from deadline.com

A relatively small standoff over retransmission consent will probably get big attention because of its timing. LIN Media's 17 stations, mostly CBS, Fox and CW affiliates, went dark on Dish Network systems today, just two days after the FCC said it will review the current retransmission-consent rules so that it can prevent such blackouts. The markets impacted by the spat include Albuquerque, N.M., Austin, Texas, and Buffalo, N.Y. At the center of the dispute are fees broadcast stations, previously free to cable and satellite providers, now want to charge for their programming.

"We only want what is fair for our local stations, so that we can continue providing the premium news, sports, entertainment and other local programming that is most important to viewers," said LIN Media president and CEO Vincent L. Sadusky.

Dish's statement included direct accusations against the station owner: "LIN Media is simply being greedy, insisting on a rate increase so immense that Dish Network and its customers couldn't possibly absorb it. Their onerous demands and burdensome contract terms would result in payments of millions of dollars more each month, exceeding current market rates and demanding more money than we pay most of our popular national networks."

Boy! That statement from LIN's Media president is a joke and a half! LIN owns WTNH-TV (ABC) channel 8 and WCTX-TV (MY) channel 59 of New Haven. WTNH-TV stabbed much-loved weatherman Geoff Fox in the back after almost 27 years of service. Two other long time anchors are rumored to be let go when their contracts come up. WTNH's news is always in third place in Hartford County. Nobody watches the 10 pm newscast they produce for WCTX-TV. Their slogan is News 8. I call them "News Ain't."

In bordering markets to Hartford/New Haven, LIN owns WWLP-TV (NBC) channel 22 in Springfield, MA and both WPRI-TV (CBS) channel 12 and WNAC-TV (FOX) channel 64 of Providence, RI.

Does that mean the newscast they produce for WCTX could be known as "News Ain't At 10 On Nobody's 59"? ;D

Personally I hope Dish sticks it to LIN - It's about time the cable / sat systems stood up to these ridiculous and outrageous demands from broadcasters like LIN.

If I were a Dish customer I would resent my rates going up due to LIN's greediness. Does anybody ever watch their newscasts? More technical missteps than any public access production I've seen in 30+ years of television! A couple of kids and a Flip cam would be an improvement ... and if they got Geoff Fox I bet half of 8's audience would leave to watch it, too!

I just tuned in for the hell of it and they can't even get road and street names correct - "Newton" instead of "Newtown" Road. I'm so glad I don't pay anything to watch their news - I would want my money back!

Cable operators and sat companies have been paying major stations for the honor of carrying their signals for years. Now, those charges are escalating at a dizzying pace. My local cable company added a $1.97 local channel (7 locals from a nearby in market city)surcharge about two years ago while at the same time dropping two out of market significantly viewed channels who were demanding $.50 a piece to carry their signals.

Where is IVI TV when you need it? Looks like the folks on Dish (who view the 17 LIN-TV stations) could really use IVI right about now. :D
