Dish Network TurboHD reviews

Hello friends,

The cable rates where I live continue to rise, and I'm considering getting one of those TurboHD packages from Dish Network. The lowest-priced of their packages would be something like $15 less per month than I'm paying right now--although I'd be getting about half the channels I get now, and I also don't know the extra monthly fees and taxes they'd add to the bill.

Can any fellow board members offer a review of Dish Network, their HD service, the monthly bill, setup expenses/troubles, and anything else you'd like to add? My sincere thanks to any responders!

I can't comment on their HD service but will give you some info on the rest.

Technically, their SD service compares well to DirecTV. Both feature tons of services and compressed video which is about equal to broadcast TV. Interruptions were few here in the desert SW but if you live where there is a lot of heavy rain you will lose the feed as the storms pass through. Usually doesn't last a long time though. I prefer DISH's receivers over DirecTV units but not enough to alter the choice of providers.

Their tiers are also similar and I found myself watching fewer and fewer channels as time went on. Last month, when it occurred to me I was watching less than half-a-dozen, I cancelled my subscription. $70/month was too much to pay for the few shows I did watch (and there are a hell of a lot of repeats on both services).

I'd had DirecTV for about three years and DISH for less than a year before that. I originally signed an 8-month commitment with DISH and when I went to cancel their service after nine months was told they don't honor less than one-year contracts and I would have to pay a disconnect fee of $240. As I had my contract in hand I told them to stuff it and after another year telling the same thing to their collection agency they finally gave up. I will not do business with DISH again. If you choose to I would strongly suggest you keep a copy of everything.
