Dish Network Zaps NHL ON OLN

Wonder if this is the begining of a feud?
Was watching OLN on Dish network, and guess what, they no longer air "NHL On OLN" wonder why?

This should come as no surprise. OLN is owned by Comcast, and they're not exactly chums with dishheads, either. That said, the pain is being felt elsewhere.

As I understand things OLN reportedly wants ALL of its affiliates to move OLN to the lowest-priced "Basic" tier if it's not there already - on dish Network that's the "America's Top 60" level. However, said network and dish have a contract in place that puts OLN on a higher program tier. Advantage: dish, as they are living up to what they agreed to.

On cable, a number of affiliates carry OLN in their high-end digital tiers rather than analog basic. OLN sees that as a limit on their avalability.

Hence, the rub. Basically, OLN is withholding the NHL from those providers not willing to match OLN's demandment - place OLN on the lower-level tier or live without, the viewers be damned. Outside of Comcast's network, a lot of viewers are getting hosed.

This is the last thing the NHL needs after coming back from a forced year off. I expect this insipid spat will be resolved sometime in the near future. It's just a question of who blinks.

Given the ratings for the first game, I'd say 'Advantage: dish'. Bad move, OLN.

I sure hope OLN corrects the major technical issues they have been having during the games as well.

From out of phase audio on the announcers mics (you can hear the skating and audience clearer on a mono set), bad audio, over-irised cameras, and the constant clipping of commercials.
It has been a technical disaster from the start...

Well Comcast is not a quality operation, so it is expected.
______________

I don't think that many viewers are being hosed by this, at all. Remember, the ratings for NHL have been pretty poor in the past, which suggests that very few viewers will care whether they can get "NHL on OLN"...

Agreed. I think hockey has become kind of a niche sport in the US, unlike baseball, basketball, and football that have a much larger following.

Mediacom carries OLN on it's basic cable package and they aren't showing the games. Accoriding to a blurb in Sunday's DSM Register, a guy from Mediacom said that a "deal" is being worked out with OLN to televise the NHL, whatever that means.

The "deal" may be to move OLN to the basic package on all of its systems. I know that OLN was on digital cable in some Mediacom markets until recently and there may be a few that haven't made the move to basic yet.

The game on right now (Boston/Montreal) has horrible audio...I have to turn my set up almost full blast to hear it.

The OLN coverage has left alot to be desired.

Hi everyone:

While I can't really speak for the technical issues, I can attest to the cheap-looking set they put Bill Clemente in for the pre-game. From what little I saw of it, it looked like _THE OLD_ NFL Today (circa 1970 or early 1980s) studio.

At least Altitude doesn't try to run a elaborate pre-game and intermission show from *their* cheap studio during Avalanche games. Then too, their major problem has always been MUSIC SELECTION.

Speaking of which, what the hell is Bill Clemente doing in a freakin' studio?? He's a color analyst who belongs IN THE BOOTH.

Just my $.02 worth :)
______________

Yeah. One good look at CET 5 here in Denver (and its CHEAP programming) and you'd see why it's a classic example of this.

CET 5 has (or at *had*) the local broadcast rights to the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football League. One night a couple years ago, I was watching FOX Sports Digital Pacific (This was before the tier of channels was replaced with the current FOX College Sports tier) and caught a Colorado Crush game 9I think it was against Arizona) and wondered who was carrying it locally.

I knew that FSN Rocky Mountain couldn't be carrying it because they didn't even promote that they were even carrying Colorado Crush Football (plus I think the Rockies were also playing that night too). I then checked KTVD 20 (UPN) & KPXC 59 (PAX). Neither of them were carrying it. Same with indie KWHD 53. Then I decided to check CET 5.

For awhile, I was switching back and forth between CET 5 and the FSN Arizona feed being carried on FOX Digital Pacific and there was NO comparison.

And the comparion has NOTHING to do with the fact that one was on Digital (FSN Arizona via FOX Digital Pacific) while the other was on Analog (CET 5) either.

The FSN Arizona broadcast was MUCH better produced. When the referee spoke to announce a penalty, you could hear him. When he signaled a touchdown, the camera didn't look as though it were out in a windstorm. And the audio of the announcers was much better.

Given all this, I just couldn't stomach CET 5's coverage and stuck with the coverage from FSN Arizona.

About the thing I could possibly fault FSN Arizona for is the use of the Arizona Rattler's General Manager as a color analyst. But then too, there may have been one of a thousand reasons why the man was on.

About I have left to say is THANK GOD FSN Rocky Mountain has taken the liberty to televise at least *some* of the games NBC doesn't pick up. :)

Cheers for now :)
______________
