Dish Pulls Plug On Disney HD Channels In Dispute

(Okay, I was tempted not to specify the kind of channels they'd be dropping in the title thread, but I didn't want to feel anyone else's wrath... ::) )

Due to carriage fees Dish Network finds "significant," the satellite operator has pulled the HD feeds of Disney Channel, Disney XD, ABC Family and ESPNews. However, the standard feeds remain active on Dish Network, as well as both the standard and HD feeds of ESPN and ESPN2.

(I wonder if New York City-area Dish viewers will find WABC-TV missing at some point... :-[ )

Not to take the subject astray but....does anyone else think news broadcasts in HD waste bandwidth?

I can easily imagine why the Disney entertainment channels would offer HD but news?

And on subject (sort of) - I cancelled DirecTV last year because I just didn't think it was worth the money I was paying. Then DirecTV dumped VS and now Disney due to carriage fee issues. If I hadn't cancelled DirecTV before I sure would have done it when they refused to broadcast a whole season (almost) of NHL games on VS.

Seems viewers should have some redress when the channel availability is negatively altered after subscribing. I won't do business with the sat people again.

If I had a choice between Dish Network and DirecTV, I'd go with DirecTV based solely on the fact that they carry The Yes Network (the flagship station of New York Yankees baseball) and Dish Network does not. On the other hand DISH NETWORK carries WPIX, WSBK, WWOR, and KTLA (ther former super stations) for an additional $5 fee. DirecTV does not offer these channels unless you live in those respective markets.

As for local channels neither one carries Telemundo WRDM-LP channel 50 nor do they carry Telefutura Channel 18.3 (Both offer national feeds of Telemundo and Telefutura, but as part of a more expensive Latino package). DISH also carries ION WHPX/26 and Azteca America WHCT-LP/38 while DirecTV doesn't, but truthfully there's no difference between the national feed of ION and WHPX. Neither carries THIS-TV Channel 20.2 and Eyewitness News Now Channel 3.3

U-VERSE still isn't available in my area, so I'm stuck with Comcrap (Xfinity) til the end of time. $121.45/month for Cable and Internet.
