Disney announces ESPN OTT service (but without content from linear channels)

The Walt Disney Company announced Tuesday that it will acquire a 33 percent stake in BAMTech, a video streaming company formed by Major League Baseball, and plans to partner with BAMTech to launch an ESPN-branded subscription over-the-top streaming service that will deliver content from multiple sports, including live games.

However, the new service will not include current programming from ESPN’s linear channels, making it an add-on and not a replacement for ESPN’s cable package.

“Our investment in BAMTech gives us the technology infrastructure we need to quickly scale and monetize our streaming capabilities at ESPN and across our company,” Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said in the statement. “We look forward to working closely with BAMTech as we explore new ways to deliver the unmatched content of The Walt Disney Company across a variety of platforms.”

Sounds like another way to access ESPN3 content now available online and via mobile devices directly from ESPN. ESPN3 carries niche sports like college baseball, college football from lesser conferences, minor league and European soccer (not Premier League, though), non-major tennis tournaments, international cricket, etc. It's available to subscribers to numerous telecoms even if they only use them as ISPs and don't have cable. I wonder if this venture will eventually kill off ESPN3.

I question the wisdom of this investment. ESPN already has multiple mediums to share their content and they already struggle to fill all of their broadcast hours with desirable content. Another platform requiring additional content doesn't seem like a smart use of resources.
