Disney Junior

On February 14 Disney will be rebranding their Playhouse Disney to Disney Junior. Come next year Disney will be taking over SoapNet and making a kids network with all their Playhouse Disney shows.

With this new name has Nickelodeon said anything? As their preschool channel is Nick Jr. and the block on Nick used to be called Nick Jr. before they rebranded Noggin as Nick Jr. What I don't understand why doesn't Disney just keep a brand that is known since 1997 which is Playhouse Disney? To me it seems Disney is just copying a name already created which has been used since 1988 when Nickelodeon started Nick Jr.

They need to stop. Why don't Disney and Nickelodeon combine all their channels into
one SUPER TBS like channel? All these CLONE channels just diminish the whole brand
and clutter up the dial.

I always thought "Little Nick" would have been a more mellifluous name for the younger-geared Nickelodeon channel.

Because brand extensions are a good business strategy, perhaps? :)

SoapNet would have been a good provider of "Dark Shadows" episodes, even if the programming service had a short future ahead. If SoapNet had the rights to "Dark Shadows" by this time, it could have been distributed to local TV stations by the syndication division of the Walt Disney Company (Disney/ABC Television Distribution).

Uh...because Disney and Nickeledeon are operated by totally different corporations...

'Disney Junior' by Disney, and Nickelodeon by Viacom. They are competing corporations. If you look at the proper definition of "brands" - Disney and Nick are separate "brands" - you're confusing brands with audience segments.

That's like asking why the pathetic NBC doesn't merge with the stronger ABC - again, because they are run by different corporations, and Comcast is hoping to transform NBC into something less than a loser network.

I was not suggesting that they form one network.......don't know where you got that from????

I'd like to hear what Disney plans to do with some of Soapnet's programming. One Tree Hill, the OC and Beverly Hills, 90210 would seem like natural fits with some of the teen, soap-oriented programming at ABC Family.

Well - because you said; "Why don't Disney and Nickelodeon combine all their channels into

Other than in corporate mergers, corporations do not generally combine their channels. As I said, children's programming is not a 'brand" - Nickelodeon and Disney are two separate brands owned by different corporations, within the general category of children's programming.

I realize I'm nit-picking your comment somewhat, but it's the obvious answer to your question, "Why don't they combine.." It's because they are two separate corporate entities with separate revenue streams, Boards of Directors, etc.

That kind of combining does happen. I recall that in the 80s, there were 2 separate comedy networks - Comedy Central owned by Viacom and one other (don't remember the name or the owner). Viacom bought the other one and combined it with Comedy Central. But that's different. That was either a merger or acquisition by Viacom.

Comedy Central actually began in 1991 after the merger of the Comedy Channel (it began on Wednesday, November 15th, 1989), which was owned by Time Warner, and Ha! (it began on Sunday, April 1st, 1990), which was owned by Viacom.

Agreed and I'd like to add Buffy and Angel with their continuing storylines and the huge success of the Twilight franchise. :)

We've already went through the name change north of the border...both Playhouse Disney and Playhouse Disney en francais became Disney Junior on May 6th last year.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I THINK the original post meant that Nickelodeon should combine all of their channels (Nick Jr., Teen Nick, etc.) and Disney should combine all of their channels and they would each create a super station. Am I on the right track?

So right. Let's roll out 25 Disneys and 25 Nickelodians and let them fight it out for the 1%
of the audience they are all trying to reach. :D Now, that makes great sense!
