Dispatch column on Steve Cannon/Replacement of locals w/syndicated

<a target="_blank" href=http://www.dispatch.com/features-story.php?story=dispatch/2005/12/13/20051213-B1-01.html>http://www.dispatch.com/features-story.php?story=dispatch/2005/12/13/20051213-B1-01.html</a>

Good Dispatch column today by Tim Feran bemoaning the loss of another local radio program with WTVN's dumping of Steve Cannon's late night talkfest in favor of Coast-to-Coast AM. Scary quote in there about 10,000 radio jobs being lost since the '96 deregulation.

And people jump all over me when I criticize CC or other big companies largely responsible for those losses. Were stations run the most efficient way before that? Probably not, but it doesn't mean those stations weren't good or didn't serve the listeners.<P ID="signature">______________

What's scary is how stale that show had gotten and the fact it was allowed to stay on that long. Granted, I'm all in favor of local talk - but syndicated radio beats stale radio any day, IMO.

Got to agree, Ghostwriter. That show sounded old in the Bobby Hatfield days. I'd rather hear Coast-To-Coast.

However, would it have been a bad thing for TVN to pony up for someone like a Curt Foster to take the shift over? I spent last Saturday afternoon listening to TVN while driving across Southern Ontario and thought he did an entertaining job with similar types of topics as Cannon. You need to have a bullpen somewhere.

The article mentioned a name I had forgotten about.

Anyone know when John Lane exited 'TVN, and whatever happened to him? Or should I check the Wikipedia?<P ID="signature">______________

John Lane is working for a church in Westerville. I tried to get him to do some shifts for us at WODB, but he has no time for radio anymore. Chalk up another great talent driven from the biz by suits from Hell.

Most of you on this board probably don't know or remember me... Brad Krantz... I left WTVN exactly 25 years ago, in Dec. '80 after 4 years late nights (yea, I was on the air when John Lennon was killed).. following Steve who was in his first nightime stint at 'TVN then. Even though he had his personal little quirks, no one was a more decent guy who had no ax to grind than Steve Cannon. His own worst enemy at various times in his career, Steve had the smarts and the potential to get beyond (what I assume he stuck with, for the most part) "old radio, old television, and old rock 'n roll," but probably never did so. I last visited him many years ago when he was working in Orlando, and I hope WTVN had the decency to at least let him say goodbye on the air instead of the usual crappy yanking someone off the air following a show and canning them. All the best to you, Steve!
