Display gibberish Sony XDR-F1HD

Ok, not it starts! I returned to listen some more to my new Sony XDR-F1HD, only to find that the display is gibberish, whether the tuner's on or off. Is there a microprocessor reset on the freakin' thing?

It's code! The alphabet soup represents accurate figures for HD receiver sales. All you need is the HD Magic Decoder Ring (authorization code required, call Maryland.)

Clever, those iBiquity guys!! ;) ;D

Really clever. Thanks for that. Dude, Ibiquity didn't make the radio! I have another HD radio that has never had an issue in two years. This one goes "freaky" after two hours out of the box!

I found the reset and have pushed it numerous times. I've tried "rebooting" by removing the power cord several minutes, and then

Aside from the whole HD debate, I think you just got a dud tuner. I haven't heard of others having the same issue so my guess is another one would probably work fine for you. Factory defects do happen (HD debate aside).

Mike, there is a small "reset" button on the rear next to the RCA jacks. It is recessed, so you will need something small to put in the hole. A paper clip or toothpick ought to work.

I guess they knew there were going to be "issues."

Chuck, I pushed the reset button multiple times. The display dims, the unit reboots, and the gibberish remains. I've also tried simply unplugging for a few hours, then trying again. Nothing works!

Try two hours in the freezer then two hours in the oven broiler on the lowest setting. ;)

Have you tried the electronic serviceman's calibrated drop? Drop squarely so it lands on all four feet from about 3-4 inches.
If it's a "funny connection" on a plug, this one may actually help.
If you are sufficiently annoyed by the device, just increase the height of successive drops until the problem is resolved or
the device is out of your misery.

Actually, in the 70's it was a common solution to put the device in the car and take it for a drive.
You "scared" the device into thinking it was being returned, so it would "straighten out".

You can always recite Ohms Law to the device, it then knows it's in the presence of someone who can fix or destroy it, that often makes the thing work right.

Difficult cases often require waving the service manual over the device, then it knows you have specific knowledge.

It sounds like you did get a bad one. Sorry. When they work, they are an amazing tuner. I'd send it back to your dealer.

They're component tuners (no amplifier section, no speakers) MISLABELED as "receivers" by Sony. Shocking since Sony has made some great TUNERS through the years.

Are there two different models with the same model number? Some of the ones I saw on ebay said that they put out 2.8 watts per channel under specifications and seemed to imply that they were radios without speakers. Is this an error on the part of the seller?
