Larry Tremaine, who had brief stints at KBLA, KTYM, KALI, KRLA and XERB in the 1960s, died on May 31, four days before he would have turned 71. Born Larry Steinman in Los Angeles, he attended UCLA before becoming Larry Tremaine at the suggestion of Elvis Presley. In 1959 Tremaine became lead singer of the Renegades, a cover band from Pacific Palisades. Eventually Rick Henn became lead singer and Tremaine acted as the Renegades’ booking agent, arranging shows at UCLA, record hops and local dance clubs. He gave a few jobs to a young trumpet player named Herb Alpert. Murry Wilson, father of three of the Beach Boys, became their manager in 1964 and changed their name to the Sunrays. They had hits with Andrea and I Live For The Sun. From 1967 to 1969, Tremaine hosted Casino Royale Fun Circus, a syndicated dance program seen locally on KCOP-Channel 13. Tremaine also hosted Disneyland’s Saturday night dance parties. In 1969 he moved to England and became a partner in Pirate Radio, which broadcast two channels, Radio Caroline and Radio Nordsea, from a ship anchored offshore. Tremaine returned to the US in 1971 and began doing voiceover work. Since 1980 he had owned the Carol Lawrence Fine Art Gallery in Beverly Hills, which showcases contemporary art and animation art.
