DJ Who First Played Tommy James - Hanky Panky

The impact was at dances. That's where the buzz started. Someone at KDKA found out about it, got a copy of the record for Clark Race and it took off almost instantly.

The story goes that since The Shondells didn't exist at that time, Clark Race urged Sonny DiNunzio to get a Fenways' cover of "Hanky Panky" out. Sonny passed on the chance, and then Tommy James was located and hired his new Shondells.

I always, mistakenly, thought it was Mad Mike who found it in the basement...but, I'd believe Livorio. BTW, the Brinkman story was one he related in the presence of Tommy James while backstage. Tommy concurred, for what it's worth. Chuck does say that the song exploded at the 'record hops' and, even though KQV hadn't played the song yet, he (CB) absolutely HAD to carry the record with him wherever he went, which is why he demanded that Rook add the song on KQV. Anyway, Clark Race and Brinkman were always bumping heads on various things....see 'The Beatles'...(lol)

I listened to Phil Brooks on WKPA all the time when I was in middle school and collected jazz records.

Not to mention their association at KOGO/San Diego. Chuck was PD, he hired Clark and it wound up with Clark either suing Chuck or threatening to sue him.

I remember sitting in Chucks office in the ole Trolley Barn in Braddock with Chuck, Clark and myself as Chuck said "Man the voices in this room" They were certainly cordial then.. WTF you doin there charlie.......

You're right! I'd totally forgotten about that. Maybe that's why I thought the record had a WZUM connection, because it DID! But I just don't know what that connection was, exactly.....I do remember listening to "Bob Mack's Wax Museum". He played a lot of old R&B, ala Porky. Songs like; "Richard Pry, Private Eye" etc...

During the 1960's KQV had " Battle of the Bands", A Friend of mine was a Drummer in one of those Bands. He told me his Mother heard Chuck Brinkman Telling the Judges witch band would win before the contast even started.I saw Chuch in person a few times he was not Friendly. In fact he acted as if he were Better than everyone else. He also came across that way on the radio to me . I swtched Stations when he was on.

Livorio never openly took credit for promoting that record. Or any other, for that matter. If you asked him, he might say something like he simply played it at a dance or two, but that's about it. That's the kind of person Bob Livorio is. He doesn't want money or medals.

Mike Metro, on the other hand, bragged it up. He called me at KPA looking for a gig when I was still GM. When I asked him for a resume detailing his past work, all I could get out of him was "I can tell you all of that on the phone" and he mentioned the record.

Sorry
