DJs on atlanta radio

is it just me, or are all the djs on the air in atlanta just average? ... they're all begining to sound the same. we need something new in this town... the regular guys are like mini sterns, and may as well just be a republican, bad humored talk show.. wait, they are! axel and leslie are boring, steve and vicki are like the bubble gum you find under a table in a junior high school... we need something new. I like matt jones in the afternoons, maybe mara davis at lunch... what about something better to listen to in the mornings? all we have really is npr and bad talk radio.

Has anyone heard james, a british guy on 99? he's something new, and he seems cool.

why is atlanta radio not stepping up to the plate, and competing to captivate its audience with some better talent? perhaps they should just throw in the hat, and just play music! do something smart and different!!

James isn't exactly new. He was on 99x for a long time then went z93. Not sure where he was the last couple of years though. Only heard him a couple of times lately but did not seem as sharp as he once was.

Kind of bored by Matt Jones and the Brit guy. They're definitely pretty average.

Reg Guys are still strong, though stronger with Southside Steve. Jennifer Reed is decent for a straightforward music jock. Tracy St. George and Marah Davis are pretty solid. Steve Craig is above average, as well.

I don’t think you are looking for DJs you want personalities. There is a big difference. Most of the people you listed are good solid DJs but I don’t think you can call the personalities. Reg guys haven’t had a new idea since there return to 96 but they are much better thany any other morning fm show (yes they need SSS for a whipping boy). Although I haven’t listen much lately, Thank god for XM and I have enjoyed Toucher & Rich online.

Midday talent in Atlanta is really solid. But that's true about them being great jocks vs true entertainers...which is what you want in mornings.

Here's what happened. There was a time when morning talent was hired by PD's who were true entertainers themselves, so they knew what they needed and were looking for. Since PD's are now just another suit in the building, they don't really know true morning entertainers when they hear them. The proof of that...GM's choose morning shows now just as often as PD's do. Mediocre talent who happens to be tight with a consultant gets "placed" and nobody asks questions. The result...overpaid, unoriginal, hack talent that after many years and huge investment, fails to get results.

The good news for stations is, this condition is so pervasive, especially in this market, that nearly every station is putting unperforming, mediocre talent on the air, so the pressure to find morning show "stars" is very, very low.

I haven't been back in Atlanta that long, so I didn't know he wasn't knew.

Sounds like Jaxraddio really has thought this out. You're basically saying it's all more corporate now.

I wrote the posting just to express how back in the day, and i'm not that old, that you'd hear real djs, on air personalities in your lingo, and that i missed that. I think a little sarcastic tone, and a different spin on the music a person is presenting, or talking around, is now not common-place. The few folks i listed as good represent that quality i atleast enjoy.

I haven't been back in Atlanta that long, so I didn't know he wasn't knew. OH MY.

I think a little sarcastic tone, and a different spin on the music a person is presenting, or talking around, is now not common-place. Let's hope we never have to hear jess on the air. Words make head hurt. Ugh

I love the hype that XM or Sirius has such a better product. They could play a much broader scope of music and yet they don't. They could cut their DJ's loose yet they don't. Instead, on their music channels, they've hired a bunch of terrestrial radio failures.
But WBCN sounds good, thanks for the tip. I dont know how Toucher and Rich are doing but you can't argue that Toucher has found some good places to eat. And by places I mean like the Big Dig, Fenway and Harvard. Burp

I like T & R. I like a bit they do called the Drunken Red Sox Recap. Did they do a drunken Braves bit while in Atlanta? I don't know how the ratings are doing, but they seem like a fun group.

Now that's funny! Your comments about me being on the radio... really though, don't you think if you're going to hear someone, you'd like them to have a certain tone, rather than just having them sound like they're reading, like on 94, 98, 94.9???

So, you'd rather hear just song after song on sat. radio, with no personality... don't think after a while you'd want some color, or some other person's comments?

On the toucher thing... I heard him on the mornings with jimmy and leslie, and thought he was pretty funny, and appeared like he knew what he was doing. I had see pictures, and laughed out loud when i read your comment about finding somewhere to eat... nicely put.

I have sirius sat. radio, but in the mornings I listen to local radio or npr... stern isn't for me,... at first i enjoyed all the channels, still do, but still find myself listening to my own cds or local radio. since it's only 12bucks a month, i'll keep it.

you guys have sat. radio, huh?

I have XM, and there's plenty of personalities. Some are obnoxious (see: Rock selection), and some are more interesting to listen to like on the decades channels. Although some chime in a little too frequently, like on the hits channels. But yes, some channels are personality free, like the classic rock channels Top Tracks and Big Tracks.

I like the guy on 60's...don't know his name. He's the real deal. I also like that Sonny Fox who does V/O for a few of the channels and interviews on Comedy 150. Nice pipes.

But yes, most of the rock DJ's on XM are more on the obnoxious side. Especially the ones who purposely go out of their way to say swear words...it's like they're trying too hard. Most DJ's are programmed (excuse the pun) NOT to swear on the air...so I can imagine it would be different when you XM PD tells you to say dirties on the air.

None of that is ATLANTA related...my apologies. Just wanted to chime in with some input I actually have an opinion about. =)

...carry on.

Just saw that one of you picked apart the fact I 'accidentally' used the word 'knew' instead of 'new.'

Interesting thought in noticing the fact you pointed that out, is that there are a few knit[or nit]-picky [EDIT] on this site. Jesus. Laughable.

I think it's obvious what I meant.

This is supposed to be a forum, a discussion... if I wanted to split hairs I'd go argue with my Mom or Grandma.

------ you, Beef. [EDIT] ;)

P.S. Hope my grammar's okay here.

P.S. Also, who ever took Beef's stapler at work, return it.. he might be more pleasant at work.

Like you, I've been "programmed" to not say curse words on-air. Mostly self-initiated, but also from management. On XM, I'd want to be the one guy who doesn't swear. Stand out from the crowd! But, if the PD demands you curse...

Wow. Were you drunk when you 1st posted? You've really stepped it up. Great work. And it's nit. Nits are basically lice. Monkeys pick nits off of each other. So if I were to call you a nit-wit I would be comparing your intellect to that of a louse.
But then you probably gnu, err, new, knew that already, right Sparky?

I'm smiling Beef. Your wit is amazing. And you're still picking apart every last detail of postings. Love it.

Keep up the good work my friend.

Everyone let this be a testament to how amazingly clever and witty Beef is.

Beef,... A guy that wishes he was really on the radio, but isn't.

(or is he?)

Maybe I am....the mystery abounds. Now I feel bad for being an ass to you. You win. You're just like my girlfriend. She always wins with superior stamina and guilt. Damn you man

Oh c'mon. Jessatl IS a girl.

I even think I know her...

Beef and Jess, Sittin' in a tree... :-*
