DL Roth - no post, cause no one listens?

Ok, so I turned off the Sirius this morning to see if Roth came back. As it turns out, he did come back. He was suspended, like Howard in December, for not following Chernoff & Chiusano's suggestions re: his show.

But I figured I'd be responding, not making the first post on this.

So, he is back on, and subdued to the point of being half asleep. Good, bad or indifferent to the regular Dave, who the hell wants a low-energy DLR? Anyway, they (BLEEP)-canned all of his crew except the English guy, made him stop the "ethnic & non-commerical " music, and told him to basically just make sarcastic remarks about the news. Making him be mellow is like asking Howard to not talk to strippers - who did they think they were hiring?

I am a Dave fan from way back - saw VH in 1980, ok, yeah, I'm old. And I really thought it was genius to pull him in to do this job - he was always a great guest on Stern. Hell, one of his "streams of conciousness" on Stern in '92 was my answering machine message for years. But he should be playing records (so he doesn;t have to talk for 4 hours), and he should be the morning guy on a ROCK station - because even now, when he talks about rock-n-roll, I can't get out of the car ( but when he talks about anything else, I could care less).

anyway ... discuss !

Who cares??? Your Point...EXACTLY!!!

If anyone from CBS is reading this, I'm available for the Free FM morning shift should DLR be shown the door. I have 16 years experience in AM, FM and TV and I'm willing to relocate. Let's talk.

I tuned in Friday and really liked the show more..
David was actually being himself..showing he has no
radio experience. Tells me CBS had no Plan for him.
Threw him to the wolves so to speak..

I liked hearing about "disciplinary action would be taken" LOL
A spanking for him..LOL
He told us what was going on behind the scenes much as Howard Stern
did all the time.
I read somewhere Dave said they had booked no guests for him
..so he was really on his own.
Could you imagine if your first day in radio was in NYC?

I think David needs an experienced Producer..writer..co host
like every one else. Doesn't have to be a cookie cutter show just
real. Where Dave would be dominate during the whole show.
Yesterday..at least Dave was real (talking calmly in a more conversational
style with just one other person. No fake laughter.....
I liked that.

As a HUGE DLR fan....

...here's what's wrong:

Dave thrives on audience reaction. His schtick is based on that premise. He needs feedback. In radio, we don't get that instant approval/disapproval. So, as a result, he really doesn't know if a topic is working, or not.

I've had him on my show in various cities, and it flowed well because as a fan, I understand how he works. And if CBS got someone who could communicate with Dave, the show would at least move well. Hutch is probably a great guy, but I'm fairly certain not comfortable enough to tell David Lee Roth to shut up. That's a problem. Dave's an alpha-male. He needs to be the lead dog. But, in this race, he's running on less than three legs. He's extremely good at opening up and telling great stories, and commenting on issues from all walks of life. But he's not a radio guy. It's that simple. Someone needs to be in there who can lead a show when Dave lags. I'm not sure Hutch is that guy. And that's not a slam on the guy. But DLR is so strong a personality that unless you put someone in there that can match wits with him, and engage him...bring out what he does well, it's going to have no consistent direction. Howard is a master at that, and now we're seeing just how good he really was. Howard got the best out of almost every guest he ever had on. Because he made them feel comfortable in HIS element. Dave isn't in his element yet. His element is in a live setting. He needs to be really shown how to do this. He even acknowledges this.

OR....

Bring in a live studio audience every day for him to play to.

Yes...I suggested that. Make Dave's show a true "live" experience. Like Letterman in the AM. He could interact with the studio audience. It's what he does best. He's a huckster. A carnival barker.

CBS..you hired this guy because of what he does well, and you're not playing to his strengths. If he's a set-up guy for the "next" host, then you've done your job...let him go now before you cost your company more revenue.

If he's NOT a set-up guy...then commit to the show. Give him EVERYTHING he needs to win. Play to his strengths. DLR is an entertainer...but you're not letting him. You want him to be something he isn't. Van Halen tried that with Gary Cherone...how'd that work out?

Ride the horse the way he's built to be ridden. Otherwise...buy that Segway. Cuz that's what you're doing.

Just my $.02 What do I know?

CBS should have tried to hire away an established syndicated morning team. I know a lot of people think Bob and Tom suck, but they would have been a much better choice than DLR. Of course, I don't know if they'd be interested or were available this past year. One of their staples is bringing in stand-up comics. The talent pool of comics in NYC is much better than Indy, so that would have upgraded their show.

Give me DLR before B&T. They sound like nice guys, but I just can't listen to that show.

Bob and Tom are unlistenable at least Roth had some sense of cool to him (before he hit the air anyway) The very idea of a syndicated morning show from INDIANA being used in a major market especially New York is beyond dumb.

It is too bad that K-Rocks management hasn't learned.... Not that DLR is great, because he isn't...however after Howard left, you'd think that they would let him be a bit wilder... Oh well....

Hey, I was quite serious when I made the offer. New York, specifically the island of Manhattan, is only 12 miles long by 3 miles wide. No sense in limiting your talent search to just that little sliver of land. Imus came from Arizona (I think). Limbaugh came from Missouri. I could cite many other examples, but you get my drift here.

Roth may have been a great frontman for Van Halen, but he had ZERO radio show hosting experience. On the other hand, I've had a few years behind the mike and I believe I know how to make people tune in wondering "what is that crazy dude gonna do next?" My offer stands.

So you are saying it makes more sense to put someone with no radio experience on in the nation's #1 market.

And where do you think 99% of the jocks in NY come from before they get to the Big Apple? Smaller markets! And how much worse can it be on FREE-FM?

Talk about beyond dumb: just look in the mirror!

i'm sure that what we're hearing is comparable to a blind date -
but the dater and datee are talent and company. the talent are
obviously comfortable enough with each other, otherwise, Hutch would
still be doing the part-time thing in Boston. i am fortunate enough
to know Hutch. he is a great guy, extremely sharp and witty, and, yeah,
he talks funny. ;-) he is a radio pro, quick on his feet and more than
likely both he and DLR are getting frustrated with the constant micro-management. the almost-daily shift in program focus has to be
excrutiating to endure, as it's most likely not easy to listen to.

and regarding DLR...
> CBS..you hired this guy because of what he does well, and

well said. Amen.

I second that. B&T have an audience. I'm just not one of them. I think they'll do just fine doing what they do, where they do it. I don't think their schtick would fly in NYC. It didn't in ATL.

I think there have been a lot of good suggestions in this thread about DLR. Including yours Keith. If CBS gets DLR a producer that can work with Dave to get him to do what he does, and have it connect with his audience. They Have a winner.

Umm Keith...If CBS does take you up on your offer. You need me pal to be your second. I'll have us on the front page of the Post in no time!<P ID="signature">______________

I never said they were not good enough. They're very good at what they do. But being from NYC, and yes...I have radio experience. I just don't think that they would be successful.

As for Keith, and I?? Yeah(!) we are good enough!
