DMN/Star-Telegram takes on KESS

I read both articles pertaining to KESS topping the Spring Book. I must say I prefer the Darling/Philpott article in the Star-Telegram. They even interviewed Ken Dowe @ K104 for his take and threw in some quick hits about other stations.

The morning news article covered KESS and KLNO only. They need another Al Brumley (or reasonable facsimile since that's not possible).

I've been away from DFW for about 6 years; what happened to Al? I know he had cancer at one time, but I thought he beat it. Why is it not possible?

He died.

"The Dallas Morning News" has had a hiring freeze on after a circulation scandal.

Regardless, a radio columnist is the least of the paper's priorities.

Interest, except among radio geeks, is practically nil.

Wow, I had no idea...I really thought he beat the cancer!

Thanks for the update.

Sorry to be so blunt.

He was a fine reporter and columnist with a wide range of journalistic experience -- not just broadcasting although he obviously loved that.

Love the Thoreau quote at the bottom ... great!

No problems. He was indeed a very fine columnist. I used to enjoy his column a lot because it kept me abreast of radio happening in DFW.

Thanks, Batman!

Al Brumley

He actually had a brain tumor.

He thought he beat it but that "pesky" - his words - thing came back.

The second time, Al didn't survive.

He was a great guy.

I thought it was the third or fourth time...

Not that it matters... it just makes him look like more of a fighter if it can be said that he battled brain tumors 4 times and only lost once.

One the best lines about him at his funeral:

"There were two things Al never said: 'No more pizza for me, please.' and 'Why me?'"<P ID="signature">______________
