Do companies owning multiple stations synchronise their ads?

It seems like KGO, KSFO, and KNBR run ads at the same time. In my car (but not at home), I change stations a lot because it's easy with the controls right there. When ads start, I'll change. But the problem is that if I'm listening to KGO and an ad comes on, there are also ads on KSFO and KNBR when I go there. Is that a coincidence or do they do it on purpose?

I've noticed this with local TV news programming. For example, if you're watching one channel's 11:00 O'Clock news and they go to commercial - then switch to any or all of the other 11:00 news programs, there is a 100% chance they will also be in commercials. And this is across owners - CBS, NBC, ABC. This didn't used to be true.

It is a pretty common practice for media buyers to book business in a horizontal manner accross selected stations, especially adjacent to top of the hour news blocks, etc. Of course these particular adjacencies come at a very higher than average spot cost.
