Just wanted to know everyone's thoughts on female personalities and/or DJ's. They seem to be few and far between, but is this because they are not needed or do they bring a special something to broadcasting?? Let me know what ya think! ???

Well...some of them have some strong opinions and more and more of them seem to object to doing their daily tasks such as bringing the main host a cup of coffee and or making a fresh pot, filing records...uh make that CD's, and saving the best punch lines for the main guy. Excuse me a minute, I have to answer the request line. The co-host says she is too busy. See what I mean.

Oooooo... Ouch... got a strong opinion about the matter do ya, fryman?? hahaha... did ya ever think that maybeeee it was just you?? that YOU werent quick enough for the punch line?? hahaha... I think you're living in a different time, dude... get a grip...

mp3, i think Fryman was just kidding ;D...seriously tho:

i've worked with some really good female jocks and some really lousy ones too.

unfortuantely, many of the times female personalities have that whole primadonna attitude. the show has to be 'all about them' and when it's this way, its just not funny. you usually end up with that whole self-absorbed routine which no one can relate to, which ultimately sucks all the entertainment value out of bits/breaks.

other than having the token mid-day female jock or the female morning show sidekick, women jocks don't seem to sell in radio.

call me sexist if you want, but women typically just aren't as funny as men, if they were, we'd have more female stand up comics, or a larger amt of succesful female hosted radio shows for that matter. the proof is in the pudding.

In my experience, it doesn't matter if they're male or female, most jocks aren't funny, period. It's an equally painful experience listening to a bad female jock as it is a bad male jock, especially when somebody who isn't naturally witty tries to be funny.

You don't have to be a funny to be a good jock, you just have to be a good jock. In Central PA, there are way more bad male jocks than bad female jocks, mainly because there are more male jocks. Statistically it's probably a dead heat.

Oh, and I've met far more dudes with the prima donna attitude than women.

Speaking of the "token mid-day female jock"... WHAT IS IT ABOUT THAT?!?! Why? What is the tried and true point behind it?? Everybody's got one, but do we even remember why they have them??

Uh, excuse me there boys, are you quite done rubbing on each other? You're like a group of muts running in circles smelling each others butt. I've worked with "boy" hosts but always as the appointed sidekick and I've been told I'm good. But when the "boy" host can't hold up his end (which oft times is quite large) and the show tanks I pay the penalty for his poor work, lack of prep and general disregard for what it takes to be good. Look around at some of the "undynamic male morning teams." Yuck. Some have been at it a long time. Time served isn't time getting better. For many of these old boys it's just been time milking the job.

So, how can you begin to judge what a woman can really do when they are usually mismatched with a male droid. I still deal with this today.

Raynar- Great to see you posting! I miss hearing you on State College radio. You're one of the best. If I can get the time difference figured out, I'll stream your morning show soon.

As far as the topic...I think it really depends on the format. Not every personality (male or female) can pull off every format.

Hey....I can name a few funny jocks on the radio. They are all not dull. As far as Woman or Man. There alot of great Woman jocks in this Area. K.C. O'Day, Polly Wogg, Kellie Green, Danice Bell, Cricket, Paige Foxx etc. Lots of good ones!!!! Man or Woman it don't matter. They are both great!

Point taken on females in Central PA. However, how do you explain the lack of female jocks on a national level? Esp in larger markets? We can only assume that they don’t test well or get lousy ratings. You have to acknowledge the fact that there are far fewer women on the radio than men.

Let’s take it to another level…look at TV, why are most of the females on TV given there jobs based on their sex appeal? Look at Fox News. Besides Greta Van Sustren(sp?) none of those other female anchors are given jobs based on their delivery abilities alone, at least 70% of it is looks. In fact there is a funny website out there where you were given a headshot of a female fox anchor and a head shot of a porn star and you had to guess which was what, and most people bombed!

Of course it could be said that Fox News caters to neo con male chauvinist pigs, so let’s look at CNN: There are far more ugly men on CNN than ugly women, e.g. Paula Zahn vs Wolf Blitzer.

To answer the original question, “Do female jocks make or break a station’s success”…the key demo for radio/TV is still men, and most men just don’t seem to find women entertaining beyond sex appeal. The overall demand for female entertainers(jocks’s in this particular case) just isn’t there.

Having said all that, if the females at Forever have been on the air for this long and still have jobs, they must doing something right! Esp KC O’Day. I remember sitting through music I hated just to hear her breaks. She’s one of the best DJ’s I’ve ever heard…male or female!

PS – Jeff, good to hear from you bro. I just checked out your webpage, looks like your doing real well. I am 7 hours behind the East Coast, so if you tune in it’d have to be at 1PM EST.
