Do I smell a fire?

Long time reader, first time poster. I'm a huge sports radio guy and always have been. I listen daily to ESPN radio, Ellis on 104 7, JT the Brick on the Fox am dial, and The X off and on to hear Alby's sports updates and Grimm's football/hockey talk. The first three I mention were normal for today, I heard Mike and Mike and the Paulsen, Crowe show while driving around, but when I flipped to the x, all I heard were commercials and songs without a single break by a jock, minus the am show. My sons listen to the music, and I like to hear the sports updates, and I sat through a lot of songs I didn't want to hear to get to a jock talking and since ten am, I didn't hear one and was only getting like one commercial break an hour, at least that I caught while flipping through the dial to get some updates. Alby sounds great and Grimm does some good analysis and gives a different perspective to a lot of topics, especially about the Steelers and Pens, and I didn't hear a thing, just songs and commercials. I know people take vacations, but the whole staff at once? That usually means something is going down like KRock. Anyone know of anything or am I being paranoid?

Hard to say. You might also just be hearing the new sound of Clear Channel, all robots all the time.

But it's worth watching.

After Prehistoric X was finishing up on Sunday morning, Whipping Boy said he would be on vacation this week but wasn't sure who was filling in though. As an edit, I am listening to The X online and Tim Benz is talking about the Steelers as I type this.

I doubt there's a flip in the future, but would welcome a K-Rock back in Pittsburgh on a Pittsburgh station.

Digby filled in for Whipping Boy today and said he would tomorrow and Friday. When he signed off for the day though, he didn't say who was up next.

Grim could be on vacation as well.

And with Vinnie leaving the station at the beginning of the month, there is the chance that they are running a little short staffed. I don't know if anyone replaced him during the evenings yet.

maybe they can borrow some of the 3WS air staff for the week.

Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky
Little boxes on the hillside
Little boxes all the same.
There's a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all sound just the same.

If you're going to apologize, apologize to Malvina Reynolds, who wrote the song. Seegar only covered it.

Bob Segar? Really?? ;D Malvina wrote it, but Pete Seeger popularized it by speeding it up a few RPM 8:). And, if royalties to Malvina's estate are in place, the Showtime series "Weeds" has probably earned the song more money than any other entity.

K-Rock did have a bit of a different sound and I actually liked the O&A/Loveline talk shows with music during days, night and overnights. I know many found it a train wreck, but the talk had me listening after it was over to music I had never heard (and the music had the same effect, keeping me tuned in for talk I might not listen to). The talent actually seemed to have a little freedom, too.

K-Rock was not a bad station. In the early days they did well when they had Stern and were playing great rock songs that were being ignored by other stations.

Also, late in the life of the station I recall going to an Aerosmith/Motley Crue show. WDVE totally ignored it, but coming out of the show K-Rock was playing the music of the two bands, taking calls from people who had been there, and also leading into the show of two of the greatest American Rock Bands ever.

I mentioned this at the time, but I have to believe in time that sort of commitment to the listener would win people over.

But they were destroyed by David Lee Roth and, if you'll consider a different opinion Griz, I think there was too much talk.

Make up your mind! Are you a music station or a talk station? At the end K-Rock couldn't do that.

I was never much for Loveline, to be honest. Many times I would be driving around late, wanting to get a late night boost of a hard rock song, and instead I'd hear that show and WDVE playing something slow from 1972.

I have often said that this is a rock and roll town. I truly believe the reason WDVE does so well is the same reason country does well in Bristol, Virginia- consider the demographics.

And why we have only one classic rock station is beyond me.

Indeed. My favorite version (so far) is the one by Persephone's Bees.

Speaking of "Little Boxes" back in the day(60's and 70's) Cleveland movie host Ghoulardi (Ernie Anderson...voice of The Lovvvvvveee Boat)used to do a bit with that song during his Friday night movie bits! As I recall he used the song to make jabs at Parma a west side suburb of Cleveland. For those of you who may never have seen Ghoulardi check this out for some comic releaf.

Why we only have one classic rock station:
There are 6 FM owners in the market.
Clear Channel has DVE.
CBS failed with K-Rock and is not big in the format nationally.
Steel City did OK with WRRK but does much better with BOB.
Renda only has WSHH on FM.
Keymarket doesn't have the facilities to do more than one format.
Salem's next rock station will be their first.

And the reason K-Rock carried Stern and Loveline is also simple, that what Stern's home base, K-Rock in NY did.

As for me, I thought K-Rock's music was a train wreck.

i had to laugh
dve was at the poison show last sunday
when was the last time you heard poison, dokken, or skid row on dve
k-rock remindes me of 106.7 the force cause when there was a rock concert they were there, played the music all day and talked about the show for days before and days after.

unless led zep or the doors are coming in concert
dvd has no buisness being at any rock show

im sure dve will be at the metal masters tour this saturday
tell me when was the last time you heard testament or motorhead or heaven and hell on dve?
the will play judas preist once in a while but it the same 1 or 2 songs every time

I missed the news on Vinny too. Isn't he also the P.D.?

He is/has moved to philly to work in the library science/archives field. He finished his Masters degree at Pitt and decided it was time to move on. He still is voice tracking for WXEG in Dayton though.

Ok, back to my first point, I thought something was fishy when I heard nothing but commercials and songs during Grimm's spot on The X. My son showed this to me this morning. http://www.myspace.com/tomgrimm

Does anyone know if this is true? Outside of the rare occasion I'd listen to the am show looking for an interview, I don't really care much for The X, but I liked what Grimm had to say and my boys liked the songs, so we'd listen going to practice or after school, and I even found myself listening while I was alone. He was one of those guys that had a unique prespective on everything...whether I liked or hated what was said, it made me think and everyone that talks on the radio anymore just talks for ten seconds and plays a commercial. That's not how it was and it's not how it should be. Then they fire the one guy that actually does a radio show like what we used to hear growing up where a guy would give his thoughts on the air instead of reading jibber jabber about the internet site or whatever. I'm really upset if this is true, and I don't see why it wouldn't be.

I've mentioned my love of 106.7 The Force.

I'm glad WDVE did show up at the Poison show. They usually will have a pedestrian appearance- introducing the artist with a DJ or a balloon or something.

But here's the question. With a band with so many Pittsburgh ties and rather relevant again with Rock of Love, did WDVE have Butler's Bret Michaels- or even Ambre Lake- on for interviews? Did they play some of their songs before or after the show?

I have heard them do it for Def Leppard, incidentily. That makes me believe, I can't prove this but it makes me believe, that it takes a publicist to contact them for WDVE to do something like that.

And it shouldn't. You're WDVE! You have some pull here!

For the record, I am looking at the Top 20 playlist of WDVE and Fallen Angel by Poison is their No. 20 song. So kudos for them. They have improved their playlist.

The problem is- PIANO MAN BY BILLY JOEL IS NO. 2?

IMAGINE BY JOHN LENNON IS NO. 3?

What are either of those two songs doing on a rock station?

Don't take that as bashing Joel or Lennon. But if WDVE is to play either artist- give us "You May Be Right" or "Helter Skelter."

Don't stand under the windows at any Clear Channel building anywhere in the country. You're likely to be hit by large numbers of falling bodies. Now that they have gone private I hear that there will be massive cuts.

Just checked out Grimm's MySpace page, and I would say that more than likely its not a hoax. He really was a good guy and I always enjoyed his take on Nascar near the end of his daily shows. Someone had mentioned the possibility of Big Mouth Mark Madden doing an afternoon show on The X recently on Radio-Info...maybe this is the direction the station is going afterall. (Sure have my fingers crossed they don't ruin The X with Madden.
