Do jocks take themselves too seriously?

Bongwater said:
I used to take myself seriously when I first started out, but I soon realized that most listeners HATED a stuck up radio ego (the kind everyone around me in the biz had). So I went the opposite direction and began making myself the butt of my own humor and it worked. People LOVE an underdog. Unfortunately, underdogs weren't the kind of people radio execs wanted in the '90s, they just wanted even bigger radio egos.

It was confusing as hell, but looking at the biz now with everything falling apart at the seams, a monster ego is the very LAST thing people want to hear...unless you're Howard Stern himself and not the usual fifth rate knockoffs......

That sidechick post was classic! No, I'm not Crash Clark but we did hammer a few beers at The Lodge together a time or two so you're not far off! The thing about having that ego anymore is that management, more than ever, is in the business of knocking ego down. They make it known that we are more expendable than we've ever been. Good luck to any of us making that big cash for doing next to nothing. Nowadays you'd better be able to give them something besides just airwork or else you're not a strong candidate for work. And if we do land a gig we're gonna get beat up on salary. But I say that not in a whining way ... it's just a reality we have to adjust to or else develop a strong appetite for Top Ramen. To me it's still the coolest way to earn a living.

Hey Sidechick1, first, yes that was very funny but come on. So Leslie hates me, once there was no chance for a real relationship it was all down hill. I still have a few friends in Atlanta radio, don't I guys, hello, come on speak up Axel you still like me right? As for burning a bridge, I didn't really burn it, I just attempted to [EDIT-vulgar content]under it. And as far as personal relationships are concerned, the ex-wife was not my fault and the one nighters had it coming. So you just keep the funny stuff rolling on the INF and I'll do my best to be good in Boston.

Wow.. you nailed it! Wanna tell us who you are? You're right.. outside of morning drive the money has dried up for most unless you have multiple jobs.

I had a chance to work with a lot of talented people with not much ego:

RUDE
AYO
DITCH
GREG CLARKSON
BETH KEPPLE
LARRY AND ERIC
SOUTHSIDE

Like Zoom says... working in radio is a blast. I'm not making money like l used to but I still love it!

AND I LOVE YA CRASH!

I love you too Tim, hope all is well back south. I'm not sure but in my 20 years on and off the radio in Atlanta I never saw myself as having an ego. I just loved to be out with the listeners knocking back a few. Oh well, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. You and SS Steve were always cool to me. There were a few pre-madonnas in the business but I'm not at liberty to discuss that, plus that radio station no longer exists so who cares anyway. I'm in Boston now so whoever is left in Atlanta radio, good luck.

Primadonnas? Aw, say not so. (And them as thought they was weren't that far up the food chain anyhow). You weren't ever that way, even sober. The few who think they are usually fall under the heading of "I was here when ya got hewre, and I'll be here when yer not here".
Tell Fred, he's still aces with me, man, aces!

Hello Crash! Good to know where you are! It's AJ brutha! Like a recovery group it's not cool to be "outed" by another poster but we're free to break our own animosity .... errrrr .... anonymity.

I don't know. Ask Barnes.
Barnes. Barnes ?
Where is Barnes ?
