Do O&A have a future at K-Rock?

After losing WBCN/Boston and WRKR/Cleveland today, O&A are now on 4 stations - only one of them is CBS and a major market - K-Rock/New York.

They still have Norfolk, Rochester and Cape Cod. Ratings could be thru the roof at all those stations, but I wouldn't know. Truth is if they aren't making money for those stations, they'll be off them soon.

Now that CBS obviously doesn't have any faith or money to put into O&A's syndication efforts. What does their future look like at K-Rock?

O&A's 15 minutes ended years ago. The only reason they lasted was hope that the show they once had might appear again. It never did, nor could it due to the FCC. Thirdly there simply wasn't anything to replace it. They tried, but O&A were easy. And now loosing stations means one thing, they simply are not earning any money for the stations. It will not be long until they are only a Wiki entry.

You have to wonder if O & A losing all of these stations could actually benefit them at K-Rock. Live and Local might be the way for them to have some success. They also have to start actually working hard again. They've been mailing it in ever since their return. Yes they had a lot of success in afternoons, but who did they go up against? Those two have so much talent it's sickening. They just have to be willing to work at it. Being all about NYC could actually be what saves their radio career... If they still care enough to save it.

One more thing... you have to wonder if Mel put a squash on those two being heard for free on terrestrial radio. He has said a number of times that he doesn't not his highly paid talent being heard for free. Maybe this is CBS just getting ahead of the deadline. Didn't O&A only sign a 1 year deal last March or April? Just thinking out loud.

Right after the merger of XM and Sirius I remember Mel saying on O+A that he wanted exclusive content for Sat radio. O+A re-signed with XM in Oct. Reading between the lines, I'm sure it was understood that when local contracts came up for renewal, they would be gone from the FM side of things. If the k rock contract is up in the spring, someone needs to let David Lee Roth know - he he.

Also, I think this is the 3 rd O+A have been bounced off Boston stations. Ramonnnne!!!!

There's a BIG difference between afternoon drive and morning drive.
The old O & A were extremely funny in pm drive then they changed the formula..Norton....etc, It's become a room full of ego's who want to one up each other.
Being "local" won't fix it....They don't have what it takes to win in morning drive radio...I miss the "good 'ol days" Billy Staples, Ron and Fez, Stalker Patty etc.

In light of the firings at K-Rock today, I think a better question is whether or not K-Rock itself has a future. My guess is that O&A won't be renewed, and that the station will flip.

i gotta go with you on this one - when you're talking about THIS kinda change at a radio station, EVERYTHING is up in the air - including O&A... :p

Andrea

BUT if they were going to flip now, why wouldn't they just dump O&A yesterday along with Boston and Cleveland?

My guess is K-Rock stays as is for however long O&A's contract is for, THEN the flip. But who knows.

PS Steve Townsend is a great guy. Sorry to see you got let go after ALL you put up with Steve!
