Do Oldies AM stations still work?

First let me say that I love oldies AM stations. I recenty had someone tell me t would be interested in buying an AM Station and even though he knows very little about radio he felt an Oldies station would fail.

Can an Oldies station make money and generate ratings? Or do you hope for a station that will have its core adience and still can make money?

Do you know of successful AM Oldies stations in markets under 150,000 in the market place. If you know of what stations - who are they and how much local are they?

I believe AM 690 KWRP (oldies & classic hits, local sports) out of Pueblo, Colorado would qualify.
Check out AM 950 KRWZ (mainly 50's & 60's oldies) Denver. Two excellent stations!

Also KCMN 1530 plays a Nostalgia format.

AM stations playing oldies is what radio used to sound like (when they were currents in their day). Open playlists, nostalgic sounding jingles and songs that are no longer heard on FM are played! If their specific target audience is 55+ (although others say this demo is not advertiser friendly), then yes these stations have potential to do well.

If you have a stand alone AM. with too many talkers and country stations in the market, would the best choice be oldies or another format?

Do you think you can make your mark with a local morning show and then Dial Global the balance of the day?

Are there any stations in Ohio or northern Kentucky using Dial Global for any format?
