do part-timers/weekenders really matter?
The problem is a lack of quality doesn't necessarily keep advertisers away. I mean, Allen Brothers would still advertise with Limbaugh and Beck even if both of their shows consisted of them taking a crap with an open mic.
The problem is that both of their shows consist of them talking crap with an open mouth.

I was going to respond to this post but then I remembered "Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated".

When I was starting out in the business many years ago, a wise GM told me "The radio business is a fine balancing act between sales and programming. Too much of one and the business will fail". Have you seen the stock prices of these mega-companies lately? With all these cost cutting measures, the bean counters are failing BIG TIME and THEY should be ones getting the axe. Citidal should just turn off the lights and close their doors.

And back to the original post... YES, part timers DO matter... wherever there isn't a computer connected to a transmitter.

Also do not forget Dr. Chuck Stevens - U92 and Mix 96 with Breakfast with the Beatles alos The Beatles Yesterday & Today shows. He was mostly part time but garnered massive arbitron numbers before the demise of both stations. I hear he is back on Q105? Saw him at the Rays - Kool & the gang night. Did a great job. Is he really back I hope?

Here's a thought.... When was the last time you heard a "part timer" filling in for a weekday midday or afternoon "full timer" who was on vacation? Nuff said. ...and the part timers that are still employed are doing practically full time hours for part time pay. The corporations have figured out what they can get away with and do it. I feel horrible for the little guy trying to break into the business these days and don't recommend it for anyone anymore. Just the sad sate of the business I used to love.

Everything you say is true. I am one of those little guys in another market, trying to get a weekend talk show started. I find myself in the situation of having to buy airtime to do a show. But I'm willing because there is so little good radio in the land of Syndication that I'm determined to do what I most want to do in this industry despite the trend that you articulate. When you say "sad state," you are speaking for 99 percent of the people I know in the business, however. A real shame.

I've seen this topic pop-up a few times so far, and I'll finally add my my word to it.

I'm a part-timer, do a air shift on FLZ every Monday 12a-5a (and other random times), and I'd have to say that I do matter. Only, I look at it this way - I have a wide group of listeners who have formed a little following of my show and career. They've personally watched my growth, cheered me on, and always keep in touch. It's to them I know I matter, and thats all I care about. Or I wouldn't be making a 53-mile drive to work.

I matter; listeners matter to me.

Part timers do matter. They are what complete the entire picture. To me, they get little appreciation for what they actually do. There is indeed a certain amount of people that will listen to you, and call you every week. That makes you feel good. However, can't let it go to your head. You are supposed to do radio for the love of it, not for the amount of people listening to you. The listeners, however, that do call and compliment you do help make you feel good...
