Do Program Directors actually listen to their stations?

Have program directors stopped listening to their own stations or am I just nitpicking? When WCRN switched to talk and emphasized their live & local format, I was very happy to finally be able to listen to a station that wasn’t owned by some big corporation. I figured that with the locally based management staff they would be on top of their game.

Recently a few things that I have heard on WCRN make me wonder if program director Hank Stolz actually listens to the station. They have been running a commercial for a local lawn & garden center since last fall that clearly needs to be updated. It speaks to the fall and winter seasons and we’re well into spring. Also it seems like they have decided to go with Metro networks for their afternoon news. They usually don’t start their traffic reports until 4:20 p.m. but apparently they haven’t told Metro. Because every local newsbreak prior to 4:20 has Scott Pike (from Metro) saying at the end, “now we have traffic & weather together on WCRN”. Then they just run a prerecorded weather update and no traffic because, of course, they start them at 4:20.

Also, they have a feature called “Info on the 8s” during morning and afternoon drive. Which begs the question are they positioning themselves as a talk station or a news station but I digress. Anyway it doesn’t matter what the actual time is (whether 18, 20, 22, 24 past the hour), it’s always 18 past. I’m glad I don’t set my watch to their time checks.

Then this morning during the Peter Blute show a promo runs for the Hank Stolz show that incorporates Dianne Williamson in the promo and an announcer states “listen to Hank Stolz weekdays from 2 to 6 p.m.”. I know the promo was recently made because Dianne just joined Hank on his show about a month ago. So why would they say his show is on until 6 when they run Howie starting at 5.

Are these gaffes just an accepted practice because no one cares or maybe no one (including the Program Director) is actually listening?

Then again I may just be nitpicking. :)

...To quote Shatner on Sat. Nite Live...."Get A Life!"..............then again I'm responding to this...Sad all the way around.! Seeya! ;D

Thats more the jopb of the sales department and the garden center themselves.

The on;ly question they ask at WCRN is.....are they still paying the bill for that spot?

Don't you imagine that two and only two things have the the attention of WCRN management? Are they making the payroll and are they paying the bills? Everything else probably falls in the "if we ever get the time" category.

On Wednesday, I will sometimes tune in the station to hear what they are talking about. I don't know a thing about Worcester but I am able to pick it up all along Route 3 and enjoy the live and local focus.

Sounds like their traffic people dropped the ball...

Traffic PEOPLE? Plural? Do you really think WCRN's Traffic Department consists of more than one person? I suspect that traffic is the responsibility of one person who is either a part-time employee or who also has many other responsibilities at the station--perhaps even time sales. Wouldn't that be the norm today at all but the highest-billing stations? In such an environment, how likely is it that such lapses can be avoided or even minimized? And the situation does seem to point out the potential advantages of large regional clusters. I suspect that one person with a good computer setup and ISDN access can probably handle traffic and production for several dozen stations. However, WCRN would not seem to be able to take advantage of sharing the workload among multiple properties. Doesn't Carter Broadcasting now own only two stations--WCRN and WACE?

Is that mortgage show still on WCRN at noontime? I refuse to take that station seriously until they dump that infomercial.

It's a fairly regular occurrence on WVEI 1440 to have two sets of commercials running simultaneously; the Boston ads and the Worcester ads. I've often wondered if the sponsors get a refund when this happens.

No Obviously Hank Does NOT listen to his own show.

Obviosly this radio station does NOT listen to thier own outgoing on air programming. If this company or whatever they call themselves don't get thier act together, thier listeners will dwindle down and they will be out of bussiness. Who wants to listen to old scheduled commercials? Who wants to listen to a station who does not even have thier timing down correctly? I don't. I'd change the station. Back to basics people. Get your stuff together and quick!

As of a week or so ago, the mortgage program was still on the air at noon. I listened for less than a minute, but it does not appear to have improved--you might say, still not ready for, umm, sub-prime time;>(
