Do stations hire non local jocks anymore?

It seems that whenever I read the bio of a jock on a station web site they are a local or least are a "native" of the region. I understand the reasoning behind this I just wonder if jocks from outside the market don't get hired because the're not from the area. I'm from the Lehigh Valley and I've seen jocks from NEPA transfer here but I can't recall a single jock who made the opposite move. Does it happen?

Do any of the stations you are following pay enough to make it worth moving in from the outside?

Do any of the stations you are following offer a "career stepping stone"? If I am not from NEPA, is there a station that will look good on my resume as I pursue my career and my next move?

If I am not from NEPA, and I am not worrying about future career.... if I want to take the job that will last for the rest of my life, are any of the stations you are following the place I would want to be forever?

Good points, Cowboy. However, if you are an unemployed jock in Bethlehem and something opens up one hour away in Scranton you might look into the opportunity. Working for less money is, for some, better than not working at all.
On a side but related topic: People in the NEPA and Allentown markets seem to think so poorly of where the live. They can't imagine why someone would actually move to there town or even commute to it to work on the air. At least, that is how it comes across on this board. It's kind of sad, really.

Aren't Rocky and Sue, Jeff Walker, Jay Daniels all from outside the area?

Indeed they are, but they've all been here a long time. In Jay's case, I'm guessing it's close to 25 years. Wasn't he part of the original line-up on KRZ in the early '80s? Walker, Rocky&Sue, and Ken Medek, too, have all been here for what now has to be close to 20 years, if not more. So was Jim Rising, right? Kevin Lynn's not a "native" but he's another who's been here for decades...

The only problem with that is with gas hovering around 3 bucks a gallon, the commute is rarely worth it. If you wind up working for less money, and then factor in gas & tolls and such, being a clerk at WaWa is almost a raise in pay.

I Remember In The Olden Days Of Local Radio When I Was At WSCR/WBQW We Had Out Of The Area

Guys Pounding On The Door. Mostly From Queens and Long Island NY, Willing To Drive 3 Hrs Do An Airshift.

A Few Guys Even Slept On The Floor Of The Station. One Of Those Guys Was Don Tandler Who Moved Here

On A Promise and A Prayer But Impressed Bob Woody (Although The Woody Guy Put Him Thru Hell!) And Joe

Montione As Well. Don Has Worked In NJ/NY Radio Since Then Including The 60's Channel On Sirius.

Don Was The Cream Of The Crop ... Not Many Of Those Guys Made It.

By The Way On The Topic Of Satellite Radio ... You Can Test Drive Both Sirius and XM For 3 Days Free.

I listened to Old Forge's Ben Smith Yesterday Morning ... Great Music Mix On XM Fine Tuning. (Ben Is PD As

was pointed out before.)

Many part-time radio jobs offer far less than Turkey Hill does. Same goes for at least a couple TV stations here, they pay less, and offer almost zero benefits to part-timers.

And what in hell ever happened to Bob Woody? The guy just seems to have fallen off the planet which, given the enormity and force of his personality, is completely out of character for the man.

Last I heard, when Renee left WNEP, he moved to Minnesota with her. Then I heard they split. And he moved to Florida. Then I heard they got back together again and were someplace in New York state. This information I have is a lot like WVIA FM's afternoon news, several eons old.

Yonkstur

Line of The Month there, Yonk. I say it makes the finals for Line of The Year!

Woody just falling off radar somehow doesn't fit with me, it doesn't wash. Even if he'd retired, I would have to believe there'd be some sort of a trail of his out there, apparently there is not.

Another guy is Bob Harper. Anyone here remember him? He had an agency/production company in the Scranton area(circa 1985-90?) and became the signature voice of several advertisers hereabouts. Those were the days when you had to make a big investment to do radio production. Now, you can set up a "studio" at home for well under a grand, which I'm itchin' to do myself.

Regarding Bob Harper...he's alive, well and thriving in the commercial production and TV/radio voice-over business. He and his lovely wife moved to Florida years ago.He is in town a few times a year, mostly for political commercial production and placement. We keep in touch. He's still as funny and talented as ever!!

A Fall From A Planet Wouldn't Be Far Enough For Most Of The Folks That Worked With Him!

Just About Everybody Involved Has A Nightmare "Woody Guy" Story.

Ask Around ... You'll Be Glad You Did! (Got A Story?)

Yeah, but this is radio! What other job could you imagine people working in for less than they could get elsewhere? And if someone came in to rob them, they'd put the guy on the air and do an interview plus a pxp of the event.

anncr: Ok, folks; I'm being held up right now.
crook: Gimme your money, fast.
anncr: Sir, tell me how you got into this field?
crook: I kept getting let go for being fried on the job.
anncr: Did you company have a counseling service?
crook: Cut the crap and gimme your money. Any in the office?
anncr: That's coming right up. First, tell me about your mother.
crook: Leave me mudder outta this.
anncr: Ok. We'll be right back after I make this 911 call.

Hey, Joe, I just listened to your airchecks from KHJ and K-EARTH. Sensational, just sensational.

You, sir, are what radio should very much still be, and that would be FUN! When the fun went out of radio, radio turned a bad corner. I am completely convinced that a fresh and updated version of the BOSS format could work today.

Woody story...?

Probably the most memorable was when Bob occupied Roy Morgan's office, and refused to leave (at WILK). Something about men in blue with guns and badges made him rethink his position. Dr. Morgan had him escorted from 88 North Franklin Street by WBPD. Word had it he went for a refresher course in EST Training. He never bothered me, I just winked and nodded. I had a blast there! I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
