Do the Oldies still include the 50's?

On my station it's the 50's to the 70's, 24/7.

YOU BET! The 50's are still alive and well on my stations. WXRB-FM (95.1) & Superstation WXRB-FM (http://wxrbfm.com) play nothing but oldies (1954-1979) 24/7. I look at it this way..... any so-called "oldies" station that only plays post-1964 songs and ignores the first 10 years of Rock and Roll is only half an "oldies" station. IMHO.

Scott Shannon's "True Oldies Channel" on WZZN-Chicago plays some 50s, but basically the most recognizable hits from that era. The oldies variety on his channel is really good and is what oldies radio should sound like, unfortunately advertisers don't see it that way and $$$$ is the most important thing.

Depends. If you're in a Top 100 market with a lot of signals, you have to be more specialized and with agencies buying heavily in the bigger markets, having a rep as playing 50s music is a killer.

If you're in a small market with a limited number of stations, you can probably afford to be wider in era- but your audience will still average 60+ years old and the general consensus is that advertisers are more and more reluctant to target older listeners.

(BTW- not saying it's right, just saying this is the way it is).

As business owners (ie-small-market advertisers) who grew up with 50s music retire over the next few years this trend will only continue.
 
WMID on the Jersey Shore plays many from the fifties. A good percentage of what they play is from the fifties, as it should be.

And WMID streams.
