Do we have to worry about KKSF dumping Smooth Jazz?

I know I personally won't lose any sleep over this...and if I do, I'll just tune in KKSF...better than Ambien with no side effects, such as sleep-eating or sleep-driving. Though smooth jazz may cause vomiting.

Doesn't every major market have a Smooth Jazz station these days? There are many other stations in the market with lower ratings than KKSF. So on the off chance that Clear Channel drops the format, somebody else will probably pick it up for one of their low rated stations.

I'm unsure if this may have something to do with the inquiry above,
but I read somewhere a month ago that the "Smooth Jazz"
brand-name in Arbitron was supposed to change to "Smooth AC"
(or, at least, make it an option to change the brand-name)...

Why would Clear Channel compete with themselves in this arena?

I like jazz a lot. I used to listen to KKSF all the time, but honestly I can only handle the same 20 songs over and over and over and over again for only so long. The only time I tune in to KKSF now is on Sunday night when they have their 'Jazz Cafe', where they play a very nice variety of jazz and rarely do they repeat songs. If they did that all day every day, I think they'd have a bigger audience. Repitition becomes very boring after a while.

The one thing I think that is missed in this format is that most jazz fans like jazz for the variety (among many other reasons), and there is little in the way of variety in this current format. And yes, I know that 'top 40' is popular, but its a different kind of music with a different type of audience. Why are stations like KKSF afraid of expanding their playlists? I'd listen to them all day if I could be assured of not hearing the same song three times in an eight-hour period.

It didn't help when they dumped all the local airstaff and replaced them with syndicated shows. DAve Koz on the weekends is one thing, every day is quite another, and not good. Is this another case where BA has hurt a strong Smooth Jazz station?

With KKSF's not so great arbitron ratings to we have to worry about a format flip?

I think we have to get very worried and soon. What are we going to do without Kenny G and Chuck Mangione's flugel horn?

Oh, I guess I'm being trashy again. They do play Anita Baker after all, but even so, it's hard to get past an hour without hearing Kenny G, Sade, and any number of repeaters. I remember the days when KKSF was programmed with a variety of musicians. I used to listen. Now I just listen once in awhile to see if they're still there.

Sorry - but what they play on KKSF should not be considered "jazz." Half of their playlist (at least during the day) is old-school R&B. If I want to hear Marvin Gaye and Al Green for the thousandth time, I can always tune in Kiss-FM or KBLX. The rest of KKSF's play list should really be called "easy listening" ...though I'll confess that much of it has some jazz influence.

In my opinion, the original KBLX (and KRE-FM before that) did the format much better, but then KKSF went on the air and got higher ratings, pushing KBLX into their current "Soft and Smooth R&B" format, or whatever they call it.

If you want real jazz - tune to KCSM, 91.1. Their signal is not great, but it's better than the old KJAZ signal. Very knowledgeable veteran jocks, and no commercials.

KKSF also runs real jazz on their HD2 channel.

I do listen to KCSM a lot, but since I am in the Livermore/tri-valley area, the signal is pretty bad here and I can't really enjoy it unless I'm down by the bay. But I agree, that IS real jazz, and I listen to KCSM every opportunity I get.

And as far as KKSF not being 'jazz', I'll meet you half way on that. It really is an R&B/jazz mix like you said, but they do mix in some good jazz as well (especially Sunday nights). It WOULD be a nice variety between R&B and jazz except as I already mentioned, they have a very shallow playlist.

I think it would be great if KCSM would boost their signal; hell, I'd donate to every fundraiser if they could boost their signal so it could be heard out here! Hmmm...I wonder if KCSM were to boost their signal, how would that affect KKSF's ratings?

Have you tried lately? They added this about a year ago:

It's technically a translator, but it's on 91.1 so it sort of functions as a booster. Only 10 watts, and vertically polarized. But it's on Mount Diablo. For me, it comes in solid driving down the 580 corridor from Dublin to about Springtown in Livermore.

People who like real jazz are unlikely to confuse that with KKSF or any other smooth jazz station. Yeah, so they're dropping the smooth jazz label--that will make a lot of difference.
