Do you have "election burnout"?

I saw a story on the local news this morning, on
which they interviewed people who say they wish
the elections were being held tomorrow. They're
so sick of political ads they'll do just about anything
not to have to listen to any more.

Without getting into your political preferences (just
your opinion of the proliferation of ads), how do you
feel?

About the same. I think limiting campaigning to 120 days before an election would be a good idea. These clowns have been campaigning for over a year! I am more and more thankful for Tivo every day.

I expect the 2012 election talk to start on November 5, 2008. ???

I'm getting sick of hearing about Sarah Palin. Yes, she's hot, but the non-stop obsession over her is ridiculous. It wasn't any better with Barak Obama. Even here in Canada they won't shut up about her. The Tina Fey imitations have been fun, though and I've always liked Tina. I can't wait until next Wednesday when I don't have to hear about it anymore. Instead we'll be bombarded with the next president's plans and what will happen in the first 100 days.

I've wondered what MSNBC's new slogan might be after 11/4. "All politics, all the time" will get redundant in a hurry.

When did this start? Wasn't Hillary the first to announce she was running. And wasn't that like Summer of 2007? Then Rudy Giuliani was next. Perhaps I'm wrong but that's what it feels like.

I bet the stand up comics are hoping Obama loses 'cause it's hard for white people to do jokes about Obama without sounding racist. Of course the African American stand ups will have a field day.

But it's always more fun to have someone like Ford or Carter (remember "Carter Country") or Dan Quayle or Palin to make fun of.

Hillary and Barack both officially announced in January 2007. Of course, both were "running" long before that. If Obama is declared the winner by 11PM ET on Nov 4, I imagine that Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee will announce their candidacies on Faux News at 1101PM ET. If McCain wins, Hillary will announce hers on CNN within minutes.

Face it, politics is now a niche. Just like there is an NFL Network which covers the NFL 24/7 and an NHL Network with covers the NHL 24/7 and TMC which shows classic movies 24/7 and SoapNet which broadcasts soaps 24/7, there will be an MSNBC which covers politics. Maybe not 24/7,but close to it. They were spinning their wheels for nearly a decade by trying to imitate CNN. Instead, they decided to imitate Faux and their ratings actually began to show some life.

If Obama is indeed elected, it will be a remarkable change. Our federal government will shift on Jan 20 2009 from one of the most ideologically conservative in history to potentialluy one of the most liberal/progressive in history. That is a big story.

There will always be folks who don't give a flying fig about government/politics. Only 50-60M viewers watched the debates. That's 250M who didn't bother. Just as there are always folks who never watch/discuss/analyze sports or movies or radio or -gasp - network television.

Of the ~300 total people in the USA these days you have to scrub most non-adults and illegals from that number before coming to a conclusion about how many of us "didn't bother". According to estimates from the Census Bureau approximately 28% of the total are 19 and under. Another 12M are illegal/non-citizen and can't vote (so presumably are not interested in a debate).

300M minus 84M minus 12M = 204M

So, approximately 25% of adult citizens watched what was, by most accounts, a boring and repetitious rant of talking points seldom resembling a bonafide debate. Not too shabby all things considered.

Myself, I watch most of the first. About 15 minutes of the second. Skipped the third. Most people I talked with considered the 'debates' a waste of time and ineffective at presenting any new information regarding either candidate (except for the VP contest which pointed out McCain's serious error in judgment).

Well the election will be decided pretty early. McCain must win Florida, NC, Virginia and Ohio, all Eastern states. If any of those four Eastern states is called for McCain, he can't win.

There are no really close states with huge electoral votes out in Mountain or Pacific time, so it should be easy to get a winner fast.

The real change of government or lack of change will be at how many seat the Democrats pick up in the Senate or House. As Reagan's first election in '80, the idealist shift to the right came more from Reagan's coat tails than from Reagan himself

I would really like to have a system like they do in England. The ruling party has to call an election at least once every five years and the campaign only lasts for ninety days or so. Its completely stupid that they "Race for '08" started around Thanksgiving of '07. I really am tired of hearing about after it having gone on for over a year, at least for president. I haven't really heard much about the local issues until the last couple of weeks.

It's going to be interesting to watch election coverage on MSNBC and FOX. If Obama wins, the anchors and moderators at MSNBC will be jumping for joy. If McCain wins, the folks at FOX will be breaking out the champagne.

Just imagine what the reaction would be on both networks if the reverse happens. I can see Chris Matthews, Mrs. Greenspan ( Andrea Mitchell) and Keith Obermann crying in their beer if Obama loses, while Bill O'Reilly will claim the country is going communist should Obama win.

Meanwhile at CNN Wolf Blitzer will be playing with his electoral map of the U.S.

I wonder if there is a good movie I can rent on election night?

Which is why I'll probably be watching C-SPAN or maybe CNN, changing to my local channels for coverages of local races.

Put Matthews, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Randi Rhodes on suicide watch, depending on the outcome. ;D

If I watch any national news network next Tuesday, it'll be CNN. At least they've given lip-service to objectivity, unlike Fox and MSNBC.

So, when will the following statement (or similar) occur on one of the networks: With 1% of the precincts in Maine reporting, based on exit interviews at select polling places in Waterville, Skowhegan, and Lewiston, CBS/NBC/ABC/CNN/Fox News is projecting Barak Obama (or John McCain in the case of Fox) to be the next President of the United States. I'll guess about 7:05 PM EST. ;D

I'll be watching PBS, assuming their coverage is anything like the debate coverage. I like the coverage on PBS so much more than the networks. It's so much quieter and more sane, and I feel like I actually get something out of it. The people who are on have credentials for the most part, and can back up their opinions with fact. And without shouting.

It'll be on from 9-12, so before that I'll probably catch the NBC coverage.

Does CNN even have any reporters left? I am a big CNN fan, but I just am sick of the 24/7 politics. As others suggested, I am sure on 11/5 we will go from who is going to be elected mode to what are they going to do on 1/2/09 mode. I just want my news network back.

Some of the local races, their ads are even more nasty than Obama's or McCain's. Recently I was in Denver at it seemed just about every other ad I had seen on local Denver TV was political ( Should Colorado go right to work? When does life begin in Colorado? Should Colorado casinos take in more money for bets and be open longer hours? Gas taxes? Did Colorado Congresswoman Marylin Musgrave "lie"? ) but the biggest race there is between the democratic Mark Udall and the Republican's Bob Schaffer. Those ads, the ones I saw were just about as nasty as any race I had ever seen. Constant bashing of the other. However The one ad I did NOT see but I have several friends who claimed they did had one of Schaffer's ads call Mark Udall a "god damn liberal" and a "liar". Ah the use of the word "god damn" in a political ad? Usually I would say "NO WAY" but for some reason after watching the other ads in the Udall-Schaffer race, why is it that I wouldn't be surprised if that word was used? Whats next? Are we going to start hearing words/things in political ads like "John Doe sucks..don't vote for him" or "..don't vote for John Doe...he and his family are worthless trash" or could we see the day come when the "f" word will be used in such ads?

Every single year it seems people claim they are so sick of those negative ads that bash but YET those who are running for the various offices and such..they still crank them out and every time they are getting more nasty. One would think the canidates would tone down their ads but in some of these races like those ads I saw in Denver, they have not.

Since there's history riding in this election either way, I think the networks should rip a page from the CBC's playbook and start their election night coverage an hour early at 6:00 pm Eastern/3:00 pm Pacific. They could use that time to set the whole scene with mini-docs on the candidates and how they got there, how Hollywood's been getting involved (especially Tina Fey's Palin), the Internet with YouTube et al. making a huge impact than in 2004, and others.

Then when the first polls of the night close at 7:00...let 'er rip!!!!

Of course the REAL battle will be who have the most obscene amount of graphics, sets and music that have been in the works for months.

Polls in several states do close at 6:00pm. Indiana and New York come to mind.

Mini-docs? I meant mini-bios on the Presidential/Vice-Presidential candidates.

Of course, it's not just the Presidential, House, and Senate races that are decided this Tuesday; we also got 11 gubernatorial slots as well as hundreds of state seats up for grabs.

Meanwhile, here are the British networks' election night plans as their coverage will last till the sun comes up Wednesday morning. And in Canada, it'll be business as usual as CTV, Global and (probably) CityTV will have normal programming with updates every half-hour and CTV airing "The Daily Show's Indecision 2008" show at 10:00; dunno about CBC-TV (except for a special extended edition of "The National"), but CBC Newsworld and CTV Newsnet will both have extensive election coverage on their channels.
