Or better put, can you be a great jock at a marginal station?
I define "great jock" solely as someone who would be snatched up immediately by another local station if the opportunity were there...not necessarily for their ratings.
I define "great station" as a station not only with ratings but with the confidence/imaging/promotions that demonstrates it knows how to win long-term (I would not include River, for example.) In other words, "Praise" has great ratings but does anyone know the first thing about them? Is there any buzz there? Or is it just a frequency that a large group of people keep on in the cubicle, because the station has cornered that market?
In the last 35 years of listening to Atlanta radio, I can think of very few who are/were in their own rarified air at their station..who were greater than the sum of the parts. My theory is that the great names in this city's history grew out of great stations...sunup to sundown.
Currently, you've got Mara Davis for sure, and you could probably argue Bert Weiss is still better than his station as a whole.
Who else?
