Do You Know of Any Radio Stations

That are long gone but their old tower is still standing?

I know of one station.  It's the old WTQX.  That tower is still standing behind Selma Communications, off Highland Avenue.  The lights no longer flash on it though.

It's still a pretty site to see, every time I drive by it.

If you know of any, share them.

WXXR-FM still up in Holly Pond, AL. Just built in 1996 or so, it didn't survive but about 5 years...

I think it was finally off the air when bought out around 2004 or so...(bought out and moved...)

I don't know of any towers that are from long long gone stations, just recently silent and moved facilities.

I'm pretty sure WCMA Daleville is still standing, as it hasn't been off the air but for a few years. WREN Carrollton is in the same situation, recently silent, although it's still licensed. WBHJ, now in Birmingham, broadcast from a still-standing tower somewhere south of Vance in Bibb County for a while. Before that it had a tower on 15th Street in Tuscaloosa, but it came down several years ago.

I think the former WPYK and WRSM towers are still up. I know RSM had different calls when they went off.

Zack,

WCMA was last on the air around July 2009. I heard it here in Tallahassee.

The FCC deleted their license on January 6 of this year.

Zach, I don't know about the KIJ tower, but I know they've been off forever. Seems like Walker county wins with the most silent AM's (3) in Alabama. Two FM's have left, 102.5 and 95.3.

Is the tower on Hwy 91 Between Hanceville and Holly Pond? There's one I've noticed that just "sticks out" in that area over near the Walter community.

RDP: WATV's old tower may still be standing, off Finley Ave. in Birmingham. I know the old studios still are.

To Mr. J. Alex Bowab,

Just discovered that WTQX had a FM station too.  I wasn't even aware of it.  This station was located on 100.9 FM (Now WALX).

If that info is right, I wonder where that tower was located.  Was it located where the current WTQX AM tower is still standing?  Just curious.

For more details on this discovery visit: http://www.davidgleason.com/Archive BC-YB/1972/B-1 YB 1972 All-11.pdf

Scroll down to Alabama and then look for Selma.

The date of this station is 1968.

P.S. The Stutts name is listed on that info too.

This is kinda off topic, but what happened to WDLK AM 1450 in Dadeville? I currently live about 25 miles from there, and have never heard a peep from it. I was driving through on 280 last week heading back to Cullman, and couldn't hear it in Dadeville, so I'm assuming it is silent?

cullman, hwy 31, building still there ,but falling in 13 something am, think it is a sports station now, behind enterprise rent a car, did a walk around and inside, so sad, but this one still lives, just not this old building and three leg tower.Soon It will all fall in.

Cullman had two AMs, both fulltimers, 1340 and 1460. The calls WFMH migrated from the latter to the former at some point. You must be referring to 1340.

The studios/transmitter on hwy 31 was for WXXR AM 1340. In the mid 90's WXXR's studios for 95.5 FM and 1340 AM were in Downtown Cullman. The people who owned WFMH 101.1 and AM 1460 bought WXXR AM/FM. 101.1 FM was sold, and WFMH FM moved to 95.5. In 2002, WFMH AM moved to 1340, and new calls WMCJ were assigned to AM 1460.

Today, WFMH and WMCJ studios/transmitter are located in west Cullman.

How did it happen that the original 1340 site became lost in the aforementioned shuffle? I have seen the site in passing. That's quite a large building, and appears to have some acreage. Who does it belong to now?

My company owns a couple of these "decommissioned" studio-transmitter sites. Most of our tower sites bring good income, but some of these can be difficult to develop. They often have "grandfathered zoning" that is contrary to the surrounding properties. That can work for or against your plans, depending on what those plans happen to be. I once missed out on a deal for a dormant AM site, similar to the one mentioned above. Could have had it for about $8,000 in back taxes. It was zoned Agriculture, so I passed. A couple years later, a "big box" retailer bought the property. Whoops. :(

1340 still uses the tower (circa 1948). I would guess a bank owns the property. The building was last occupied by a real estate Co. I've seen a picture of the building from the '50's, it was nice. I always wandered what the 2nd floor was used for. They were only 250 watts in those days.

thanks - The FCC shows 1340 at a site on the other side of town, so the site off 31 must be totally vacated.

a little late on this one, but the former studio building (for WXXR-AM, located behind enterprise rent-a-car) was purchased by the lady who had the real estate company's - um - squeeze? I'm not sure they were ever married. He has several international businesses and I believe is made of money - and as far as I know - still owns the property. I noticed they've torn down the building...

...and travis? That'll explain to you how the tower went dark and they moved to the west side of town (where WFMH is/was). In fact, I talked to the fella who tried to engineer a link from the towers at WFMH over to that old WXXR-AM tower ; I believe the radio path went right over the subdivision that is above the cullman shopping center (quite a bit of terrain) ; I believe that link was impossible....

I am not sure what they wound up doing ; but it didn't stay there long (after the station sold in 98)

I believe as long as the Bakers had it (in downtown Cullman) the AM broadcast from that location on the north end of town.

Have heard rumor WKUL's Ron Mosley wants to sell his station fyi.

Off topic slightly, but what was the purpose of moving 95.5 from Holly Pond to Hackleburg, and then changing WRSA's COL to Holly Pond as a "backfill" allotment? Is the former 95.5 Holly Pond tower being used for anything today?
