Do you miss The WB and UPN?

Just wondering who here liked the old WB and UPN networks.

I'm 13 and starting in 2004 until they canceled the afternoon Kids WB block in Jan 2006 I watched every afternoon. The WB can still be found online with some web originals at thewb.com, I could see them maybe puting those shows out for syndication and calling it The WB

I guess it depends on the market. I appreciated the efforts UPN Buffalo made to maintain local news content regardless of ratings. Any other network would have given up without thought into timeslot or whatever.

Good for them!

The WB turned a once great heritage station like KTLA and shoehorned it in with crap programming like Unhappily Ever After. The CW is really no better but it's difficult to polish a turd.

It's been a while that I thought about the WB, but I miss the WB. Never really cared for UPN too much. The CW to me is not the best of both networks, and actually sucks at it. I'm actually wondering how much longer CW will stay on. in Chicago, I'd like to see WGN-TV go back to being an Independent. WB was ok on their station, but they had to farm out some sportscasts to WCIU in order to commit to WB programming (even more so with CW).

What's Michigan J. Frog doing these days since the demise of the

...Michigan J. is the only thing I miss of either one of those outfits. Of course, the original UPN logo was ripped off from CTV's, so if I want to look at those shapes I simply go to CTV's website ;D ...

I will miss UPN. Not only did they give us the television series based on one of the most popular comic strips ("Dilbert"), but they also gave us such gems like "Shasta McNasty," "Hitz" starring Andrew "Dice" Clay, and... this:

I miss The WB. Granted, towards the end it did take a bit of a hit programming wise, for much of the 90's and early 2000's, it was quite worth watching. I never cared for UPN, outside of a few shows here and there.

When they combined networks, they took the worst of both and put them into one, and now the network is pretty much worthless.

That happened with a lot of great heritage independents - KTLA, WPIX, WGN, etc., etc., etc. Yeah, I've heard the argument that 'something' had to be done but it was still the move that basically ruined those stations for me.

And, UPN was the low-budget, ghetto version of the same malady. Same deal.

So, in answer to the OP's question: NO.

Besides, how can we miss it if it doesn't really go away? After all, we still have the absurdly named "CW" and Fox's joke on us all that's known as "My Network TV".

The only show on UPN I watched regularly was Star Trek: Voyager. I also liked Legend when it was on in the early years, although it didn't last long. I also discovered Everybody Hates Chris when it went to Nick at Nite and liked it. Other than that very little on UPN and nothing from WB interested me, and nothing from CW does now.

I agree with the other posters that for the most part UPN and WB were a big cause of the end of local independent stations. I'd also like to see CW shut down, but I'm afraid that local stations would just go to more of the same garbage on local TV that is in the daytime.

I miss the WB, not certainly not UPN. I was a teenager in the 90s so I fit into the demographic of the WB and regularly watched shows like Unhappily Ever After, Dawson's Creek, and Buffy. Plus, I love the WB's imaging. Michigan J Frog is definitely missed. The worst part of the CW is their terrible logo and color scheme, but their essentially a continuation of the WB's programming philosophy so there are still a few shows I watch (One Tree Hill and Vampire Diaries).

I miss when Michigan J Frog say "It's the double double double double double double WB!" I miss both The WB and UPN mainly because the good shows that were on air back in the '90s. Those were the good 'ol days. The Wayans Brothers Show, Sparks, The Parent Hood, The Steve Harvey Show, The Jamie Foxx Show, Kid's WB, Sister Sister, La Femme Nakita, Moesha, Star Trek: Voyager.

Maybe the reason I miss WB was because it did the opposite of what your saying. Here, we had two independent TV stations. A "General Entertainment" one (KMSP 9) and a "family oriented" one (KLGT 23). WB came to 23, which was very welcome as 23 was very weak as a family station (and likely would have gone bankrupt had it not been for the flip, and later sale to Sinclair).

With that said, UPN did destroy KMSP which was once a very strong independent station here. It stayed a very strong station, one of UPN's best performers, but only outside of UPN programming. Then, when Fox bought Chris Craft TV stations, they flipped the affiliation to Fox.

Of course, another local TV company (Hubbard Broadcasting) saw the hole left by the two independent TV stations and bought what was then a full power Home Shopping Network affiliate and turned it into a rather strong independent that still exists today.

Besides, how can we miss it if it doesn't really go away? After all, we still have the absurdly named "CW" and Fox's joke on us all that's known as "My Network TV".

I just find it highly weird that, at virtually the exact same time in January 1995, we were being presented with not one, but two new television networks, whose backbones were major movie studios. I was waiting with baited breath on when MiramaxTV would come into existence.

By the way... I do not miss Jamie Kennedy or Ellen Cleghorne. Or "Flex".

Short answer, not really.

As somebody a few posts above noted I think The WB found its niche in the late 1990s-early 2000s with a lot of teen and twenty-something programs.

As for UPN they did save Buffy the Vampire Slayer after it was canceled from The WB.

There was one show UPN turned down, American Idol, which, given the network's somewhat limited exposure across the country, may have saved and expanded UPN, or broke AI with the show being canceled in less than a year.

Was not really a major fan of either. Was highly disappointed with UPN's additions of the
Star Trek franchise. Turned-off quickly on the WB when I saw Unhappily Ever After was such
a cheesy, blatant ripoff of Married with Children. Was never really in the right demographic for
Savannah, Dawson's Creek, Buffy, etc. There was a time when I did not have cable where
I'd check them out if there was nothing else on, but never became a fan. I did like the
Michigan J. Frog segues though.
