I think it came out in the late 70s when I was in high school; it only lasted a year or two and I used
to buy it at a newsstand on Central Ave. in Lynn. It was called "Waves" or maybe re-titled "Radio Waves"
and it was great to have back in the pre-Net days. Maybe like a radio version of TV guide for the Boston
area? It would list stations and their approximate signals, contact info for each station and programming
if the station provided it (WCRB, WHRB, WGBH etc)
There were also letters and articles. They even took an article from me (I was about 17 in '79) called
"Radio Ratings Hype: Fair or Unfair?" Based on articles I'd read in the Globe and elsewhere, I talked
about whether or not it was fair for stations to run contests, etc. ("The 12 Days of Kiss-mas") to
boost their ratings. Hah.
I don't have the issues anymore but wish I'd saved them just to see how the dial was then, etc!
(If I'd known it might be of interest later...!) I also
remember when papers like the Globe would put a list in every day of call letters and frequencies (maybe
format, too) plus radio highlights for the day. Eventually there was a page in their TV Week magazine
(now gone--both the page and the mag!) with the frequencies/calls and highlights. There may be
some radio highlights in various spots in the paper now --"Sports On TV, Radio"; some radio highlights in
the "g" magazine; I think they even have listings of classical music on the radio ("In the air this week")
both local and for online listening. Or, they did. And no more radio columnist (Clea) anymore...
How about the Boston Phoenix? Anyone remember when they'd have a list of radio highlights on
the same page as their TV ones (Hot Dots)? Then they dropped it. I guess there is no radio other
than WFNX
