Steve Sohmer (not to be confused with WFAN's Steve Somers) was
in charge of promotion at all of the Big Three in the late '70s and
early '80s. His picks for the best (and he created them all, so take
these with a grain of salt): "Still The One" (ABC), "Looking Good Together"
(CBS), and "Be There" (NBC). Even I have to admit that he did one promo
in the "Be There" series that was a beaut: Mr. T says something like, "Now
on Tuesdays (1983) there's a show called "Just Our Luck" and another called "The
Mississippi." So if you're watching "The A-Team" you ain't missin' nothin'!" I
remember another, although the show didn't make it: NBC had scheduled a show
called "The Rousters" on Saturdays against "The Love Boat," and did a spot where
toy guns blow a toy boat out of the water; NBC's promo guy, Danny Dark,
imitates ABC's, Ernie Anderson, by saying "Rousters gonna sink the Looooove Boat."
One of the more cloying, from the same era as "Be There," was "That Special
Feeling on ABC"; one of these has a kid bringing home an orphan puppy and petting
iit while the whole family watches television. CBS's "We've Got The Touch"
was about as bad: a paraplegic finishing a marathon in a wheelchair, and a deaf
couple communicating in sign language.
I remember one on CBS in the '60s: "It's got the look of a winner." WNCT Greenville/
New Bern/Washington, NC (a CBS affiliate) used that in its own promos even after CBS
stopped using it.
